Suddenly, clutch is very easy (low resistance) at its' very top, about 2 or 3 cm, by means it is easier to press and returns back much faster then at lower area. No sound can be heard od edge of that area. What could it be and is it safe to drive like that (not for long of course) or something else can be damaged? Car is golf mk2 16v KR
Has the biting point moved? Check the cable where it conects to the clutch arm (gearbox end) - you might have lost a rubber spacer.
if i recall corectly, biting point hasn't moved at all, so this doesn't affect od starting or changing gear cable is only a bit loose, but it does pull clutch arm fine in that area. you mean on rubber spacer on end of cable (where connecting or clutch arm? no that's all ok). I'm not that lucky to have trivial problems like that
How much can you pull up the clutch arm at the gearbox, by hand? Past horizontal? And where does the clutch arm sit in it's resting position? Near horizontal or at an angle?
can't answer any of that at the moment, will look tommorow can't you simply tell me what are you suspecting on and what should be visible simptoms on clucth arm?
Well, it should sit just below horizontal (at rest), and you should be able to lift it about 10-15mm, to just above horizontal...... once you've had a look tomorrow, post again and we'll see if we can find out what's wrong!
by my memory, it's just like that, in rest it's little below horizontal and I can lift it above horizontal and then I think it begins harder to lift it by hand..............
That sounds right....... check the biting point tomorrow, in case it's a collapsed release bearing or something.......
biting point of clutch is OK, hasn't moved at all. this what happens is in "inactive" area of cluucth pedal, everything seems to be in its' place except of behavioral of pedal
just a thought, but it could also be thepedal stopper that sits under the dash that has moved/broken. This has happened on both my golfs. To check if it is this, have a look if the clutch pedal is sitting higher than the brake pedal. if yes then that is the problem. if no then ignore me and carry on with TSC's info. cheers, C Edited by: sife1
Aye, that's a thought - I have 3 golfs, and they all have broken pedal stoppers! Could well be your problem....
due to poor weather and other obligations, I only got time to compare pedals and saw that clutch pedal lies higher than brake pedal. I guess that says enough and I hope that I'll manage to see it in detail tommorow. If pedal stopper is broken, is it recomendable to buy a new one, improvise with something else or even leave it like it is?
Just buy a new one, they cost pennies and it sounds like that's the problem. In fact buy a couple, I always seem to break one.....
since you're here, could you briefly tell me where is it located and what needs removal (plastic above pedals is first, I guess) to save me some time
Easiest if you take the driver's seat out to get access without breaking your neck! Then it's just a matter of seeing where the clutch pedal is hitting the metal bracket - you'll be able to see from there the hole that the stop locates into.
is this where that pedal stopper should be located? Here can be seen that clutch pedal is higher than brake and finally, it seems thatI lied about moving clutch arm by hand. Here are pics of it in rest and when raised by hand (I can raise it only for about 1cm looking at the side where the cable is) So is it only pedal stopper, and the thing I don't understand why haven't I found it or at least pieces of it lying somewhere on the floor???
