    No- it's not a road.

Apparently it's a special 'square bore' prototype engine 1999cc that produced 275PS...
allegedly VW developed it in 1993.

Does anybody know anything about this?
    Code maybe AS9...

A little light research and much is revealed. The engine was a Turbo'd unit and placed in a lightweight mk3 with 4-wheel drive which VW hoped would resurrect their motorsport image. It proved too expensive though.

Lot's of special golfs featured. Not sure how genuine the pics of the mk3 A59 are, but it looks just like a bloody mk4!!!

    Happy holiday

it means the bore and stroke are equal. in this case 86.0mm x 86.0mm.

there are over-square and under-square bores too. I'm not sure which is which. One means the stroke is longer than the bore is across, the other means the stroke is shorter than the bore is across. Anybody know which?

why would a turbo 16v Mk3 be "too expensive"?
they already had the 4wd platform, the engine is not a million miles away from the existing lump and the turbo has been done before..

god if it was so expensive it wouldn't be getting donw on these pages now would it

true jc.. but was it all the same back in '93?
VW didn't market a commercial Turbo motor (excluding diesels) until the mk4 came along.

Also, I think i read somewhere (but this may be wrong) that the A59 was a turbo & supercharger unit. - If this were the case it is understandable. (Even now VW are concerned about the 1.4 GT engine and reliability?)

You do make a good point. Perhaps it is was just a case of technology back then?
