View Full Version : Who's got the highest mileage valver?

Alexander
8th November 06, 08:38
My 91 Mk2 Golf GTI 16v has done nearly 170k, but to be honest it's still tight and responsive to drive, and pulls like a train - it could pass for a car 100k younger, if you ask me.

However, while I realise nothing lasts forever a guy at work had one that did 250k before he sold it on!

Who on here has the highest mileage 16v? Do you think they'll go forever if properly maintained?

Mine rusted out at somewhere near 250K when I cut it up. Some ridges in the bores and valve guides needed doing when stripped the motor down. Went really well and used no oil right up to the bitter end!

Hmm... mine's only on a mere 150k miles, but I've already swapped the engine around 5k miles ago, not that there was anything wrong with it, just wanted more power. [:P]

mines was 112K when valve stems died so got a 2.0 in now but rest of its solid

Mine went over to 170k last week, still pulls hard, and is smooth.

When I had the head off at around 135k it the bores were perfect.

Hehe, mine once broke down (wire came off starter motor - doh!) and the RAC guy who came out was telling me about his Rallye. When he checked the mileage for his paperwork (165k) he says "Ah, you're just breaking it in!". Value!

My old 1.8 managed 158k before a minor water leak revealed a warped head [:^(]

Other than that it was still going strong though, managed to kick out 145bhp at WRC with 155k on the clock [8D]

My new engine has now covered just under 6k...it's gonna take me an age to get to get round to 150k+ [LOL]

Just sold mine, got it on ebay but was offered a few quid by a neighbour, it was on 236k and didn't smoke/use any oil

A bloke in work bought his valver on 45k nearly 14 years ago.
He sold it with 214k ten years later still pulling strong!! [8D]

I was chatting to a guy a couple of years ago about his valver. Had done 248k at the time. He'd owned it from new and hadn't done anything to it other than getting it regularly serviced. Said it was still very relaible and he used it as his daily car. Said he wouldn't sell and that he'd keep it until it died. Working on the fact it was doing 15k a year, providing it's still going, it should be around the 280k mark now. That's high mile diesel teritory.

So the well loved kr ive bought with nearly 130k shouldnt have any problems then...
At least im happy.
Any quick checks to see how well an engine has been looked after without stripping it?

mines only done 135k, pulls like a train but it did have a full head rebuild at awesome gti 20k ago

Alexander
8th November 06, 14:03
How much did the rebuild cost you, and what difference did it make (or was it necessary?)

DAVE 2227

My valver had 215k on it when I bought it.
Ran fine tbh but I changed engine for my rebuilt one so there wouldn`t be any surprises from an unknown quantity.

Mine is on 196K and keeps on going- full service history , never had the head off it!!

Roll on 25th November and i will have her on the rollers to see just how strong the old girl is!!! anything above standard 139 would be AMAZING!!!!

I've seen em with 200,000 plus miles on them. I've got a moddest 128,000 on my valver atm and that was with a full head skim/build at 124,000. Silky smooth and goes like a dream as a result

Nice one dude!

I put mine on the rollers a bit prematurely a few weeks back - still managed 135bhp with a blowing exhaust manifold and no cold start valve/fifth injector! Gotta get it done again in the next few months, see what it's really kicking out.

Funny that, the reason i missed the last rolling road day i was going to go to is because my exhaust manifold flexy section decided to disintergrate over night... felt like lost loads of power and sounded more like driving a tractor! [:^(]

had the 196700 mile valver on the rollers yesterday and managed 137.8 BHP- very pleased with that especially since car is due for a service and needs timing re-done so that should help a bit!

194k on my old valver when I sold it, still going strong today, used by local farmer to pull a horse box up and down the country, so must be well into 200k+ by now...

mine 'lasted' 154k. the only reason it died was because one of the spring holders fell apart and a fragement of it jammed the mechanism closed. i could not disengauge.

the plate was still about 8mm thick. ive put up pics in the tranny forum

Do you not think it has been changed before?

There is no set mileage for obvious reasons how long a clutch will last but believing that it will last anything over 125k is ridiculous. I have had close to 80 cars maybe and I’ve never had one where a clutch has lasted much past 100k. This isnt the start of an argument by the way.[;)]

the first owner was Telstar, i have all the service print outs of the car whilst it was in their posession.

the next owner (the guy i got it from) was a golf perv too... i have receipts for everything from 2000 onwards. there is no receipt for the clutch

my car before this was a 2002 a4 tdi with 130-150k miles. i was the 2nd owner, a fleet owner before that, i had the complete audi service print out do dah... no clutch listed on there etc. so thats another car where the clutch lasted more than 150k.

most of the cars ive owned have had 100+k miles. no clutch issues and i cant remember seeing clutch work having been done.

it seems loads of golf clutches last well past 100k

prof
12th June 07, 17:02
depends on the life of the car

100k around london will mince a clutch, but 100k of mostly motorway will be an easy ride.

mine exploded at 110k jammed in the flywheel and cut through some of the casing....

Matt82
12th June 07, 17:04
yup, ive got a fair few ex fleet cars in the past... after 100k+ miles on the motorway in 2 years, the car is barely run in.

my golf one was bound to die some time almost simply due to age.

Bobby_T_16v
12th June 07, 17:21
Mines is at 85K, which means by what im readning, the engine will outlast the body !

Matt82
12th June 07, 17:23
well mine has its rust issue... if i dont sort that soon, the engine will easily out last the car.

My dad's Mk4 Golf Gti has done around 140k on the original clutch. He's owned it from brand new - Lots of motorway miles.

my corrado 1.8 16v was on 205,000 miles before it took the engine out for the conversion. was working perfect, no leaks or rattles and was still able to spin the wheels up to 60mph before it got some traction[:)]
