Yeah but retro styled 5 door Mk1's are becoming fashionable now. Think of all the stuff you could do to it, without dealing with the dreaded rust! It could be like the blue one with polished zender turbos, but brand new. How cool... [;)]

i like them yes, but there's just something about them thta looks really ugly, so i'd rather stick with a proper mk1 golf
i'm assuming this is the citigolf yeah?

would i spend almost ten grand on that? no i dont think so [:s]

But think what other brand new cars you can get for less than 10 grand. There aren't any that I would consider. [:s]
I think its a great idea, still in keeping with the original.

Great idea [:Y:]
But you'd need new front wings and grille, and there's that weird crease in the rear pillar before it would like an ur-Mk1...

they have to change that dash!!!! it just lets it down!!!

Polo dash isnt it?
Good idea to get someone importing them properly. Just a shame they slightly ruined the styling with modern safety implementation, if theres such a thing in SA.
And i so wish they did a 3 door version.

Why are they making this car? surely it must be cheaper to retool with the newer MK3 or 4 than re-engineer all the new stuff?
reminds me of the whole Fiat 131 Miafuri reborn as a Lada saga a bit too much...
Deako
21st October 04, 17:46
They havent re-engineered anything as far as i know. Just updated a few things.

Nah, it just looks like a Mk1 Golf that needs a damn good lowering and some mods to the front end!

Come on, where's your imagination you bunch of woosies.
Little bit of work and you could remove the crease, tidy up the grille. 5 doors presents a bit more of a challenge, but not impossible.
You'd be getting a BRAND NEW Mk1 shell with a modern dashboard transplant and a lovely brand new 1588c GTI engine.
RHD drive too, I wonder what they've done with the cross linkage in these cars? Notice the bonnet pull is on the right hand side....
Yes, a bit expensive, but ... it's a mk1. Imagine driving around with a UR05 GTI numberplate!
Cheers,
Drew.

I wonder why they use the 1588cc block rather than the 1781cc one though. You'd have thought the 1781cc was more common and easier, particularly since it is more powerful and economical than the 1588cc, and used in a lot of other VAG cars too.
Cheers,
Drew.

I would have one if it was 1.8 and 3 door. at least its a bit different from most new cars on the road.

Maybe it's a tax thing? I know it's aimed at the bargain basement end of the new car market - car hires companies, young drivers etc... Cheaper to insure and tax?
drew
22nd October 04, 11:12
The odd thing is, if you look at the picture of the engine bay, the coolant hose comes off between cylinders 3 and 4, like the 1781cc engine.
I wonder if this 1.6 isn't based on the original 1588cc from the mk1 1.6 GTI? Perhaps it's something out of the mk3/mk4 range?
Cheers,
Drew.

What's the deal with the front end anyway? It looks like it uses a Mk2 grille? Or am I going mad...?

Looks like a late model mk1 cabriolet grille to me.

Must be the shape of the wings throwing me off. The seem to slope backwards at the front, Mk2 style.

Little bit of work and you could remove the crease, tidy up the grille. 5 doors presents a bit more of a challenge, but not impossible.
And then weld up the back doors to convert it to a 3 door shell.. [8-}]
I don't care how many kids/dogs/cats/shopping you've got, it's got to be 3-door. [;)]

That's ones OKish!, being 5 door it'll be easier to change the oil filter on the rear engine [LOL]
I wonder where they got the idea of the exhausts from. [LOL]

It's cool they are still making them, but the 5 door just doesn't do it for me.
