cant be anything crazy like a w12 say it has to cost under 3000 for the lump would it be an audi 20v, vr6 with turbo. 1.8t? maybe a volvo t5? other makes of engine? bike engines? any ideas?

mk2 is heavy for a bike engine, but at 70kgs-100kgs the engines are very light
a LS6 corvette engine is small, light and makes 300odd bhp, but i bet all in a turbo'd 20v will win what's Bill's 450+/tonne not much that will stay with that

Fiat/Lancia Twin Cam.
Go for a 16v Turbo from a Lancia Thema. You can buy a whole running car for less than £150. They are the same unit as the Delta HF Integrale 16v (different exhaust valves but that's about it) and they are good for 300+ bhp with very minor tuning work.

How much would an RS6 motor cost....its effectively two 1.8T motors on a common crank so must be lighter than two 1.8T motors.
Probably good for 750bhp. 4x4 probably required though!!! |

That is like saying 300bhp is easy from a normilly aspirated 16v motor because you have got 160bhp. Over 200bhp per litre is never easy. |

Still got to find another 50% more power.
Sometimes more boost means less power if you cant get the airflow. I would think these quoted horsepower figures are as a result of massive boost which will heat up the turbo in seconds and result in far less power in reallity. |

I dont know anything about turbo charged VR6 engines....and I hope you dont think I am attacking you, because I know how these posts can sound impersonal.
However, I do work as a Engine Design Engineer and I have worked on a Supercharged 4.2L V8 engine, and I know how difficult it is to get 450bhp, and its the last few bhp that are the most difficult. As I said..more boost doesn't always give more power...it will to a point, and then you get caught out by thermo dynamics. I am sure if you ring the company you were talking about and asked them for 750bhp they definitely wouldn't use the word "easy". |
