My mk3 SPi 1.8 Golf is giving me a headache at the mo:

Was fine tues, got in it fri to go to work and it started instantly, but ran on 3. I thuoght, that's prob due to the bad weather and it'll be fime when warm. WRONG, it didn't get any better when warm. If you cruise at low load it steadies itself, when the lambda feedback loop cuts in. but if you move the throttle it runs on 2- 3, really rough. It always stars first time, just the same on LPG or petrol. Any ideas?

    So far i've changed:

    Coil
    Plugs
    Leads
    Rotor arm
    Dizzy cap
Whole Throttle body, with TPS, etc sensors

    Checked:

    Cambelt is tight
    Dizzy it tight
    Voltage OK
    compression, all about 170 psi
    ECU plug, soldering, etc
Spark plugs all look the same
    Exhaust is free
in measuring blocks, all the variables are all in green text, the ECU thinks they're all OK.
I don't think it's the dizzy hall sender as the rev counter, and ECU rpm readout both work OK

It did have a TPS sensor fault in the ECU, that's now cleared, sensor OK, cables checked back to ECU and it reads the throttle values in vag.com fine, and it is the same with the other TB....

There are now no faults logged.

    Any ideas welcome...

just a thought, but my Vauxhall Duel Fuel Combo used to go through a lambda sensor every 6 months and it used to throw the engine into turmoil hence I got rid of it...

probably isn't that but worth checking as they are prone to go on there type of vehicles

I have similar issues with my ADY mk3 golf, I have changed the crank sensor, MAF sensor, coil, checked timing but still running on 3, thought i's cracked it after seeing bare wires on the crank sensor loom but still running issues, it won't even idle, just tried re-seating the engine loom plug and can't get it back on now, have to wait for daylight..! has anyone got any other ideas? A mechanic friend thinks it might be ECU... not too sure, any help greatly appreciated from both mark25 and myself!

Have you tried unplugging the coolant temp sender?

I'm down to the ECU myself, if it is it 1. must be the ignition side (cos it's the same on LPG) and 2. It isn't telling me about it:lol: . Mine doesn't have a crank sensor, it's all off the dizzy hall sender. I'm also wondering about the engine itself...compression is good, but it really seems like it's running on 3. I'm wondering if one of the tappets is broken[:s] meaning a valve isn't opening properly... Head looks OK for 260K miles certainly not gunked up, hasn't been flushed either!

I have tried disconnecting that and it made no difference. my car appears to be very badly running on 2 cylinders, sometimes 3 if I'm lucky...

I have spent a small fortune on the car and want to sell it but ca't really in this condition.. [8(]

Or so i thought[:x] It was V. tight to turn on the cam sproket, even without the plugs in. But now i've got all the belts off, everything individually seems free[:s] [:s] [:s]

    Any ideas?

NB: By my reconing the cambelt had tightened itself... When i first started looking at this fault it was a lot tighter than i set them[:s]
