well the reason i was not on track at curby yesterday , was on friday i did a day at combe (well 1 session and 1 lap)

real shame as the engine had less then 1500 miles on it . but tbh it was my fault for using gsf rod bolts . lesson to be learnt .

ARP ALL THE WAY NEXT TIME !

Does not look like it is the bolts that bent the con-rod though. More like det pressure spike.

Not only has he blown it up, but now doesn't have any means of washing the dishes either! Did it go at speed, on the road? When they do that, it tends to be spectacular!

lol just wipped the head off and it seems to be ok . but i will send it off for a proper inspection . think toyotec might be right . when on track there was a slight misfire at 5200 but it seemed to pull threw it . i thought it was fuel starvation out of corners (only done it on 3 corners ) , but as always you think it will pull threw it .

washing up is all taken care of by the misses :)

block is out and the sump is off . i missed the fact that there are 3 large holes in the back of the block ! it still had about 3l of oil in it so it didnt dump much on track thank god . had a few people pop over today to see the damage and all of them are that the bolts failed after .

from what i gather the knock control is set to 6400 hz and that is where knock happens but im failing to understand why this has happened on 2 engines now ?

1st engine spun a bearing on no2 (this is the same block by the way ) and the block was looked over last time and deemed usable . if it is detanation , why ? i have had my fuel pressure checked and it was 85psi . could it be the flow ? how can i check this ? the fuel system i am using is a mk1 gti k-jet and the management is ke motronic

nope 3 rods are still connected to crank . l

really can't decide what to do with it at the mo . fit a kr for this year (easy and cheap to come by) and build another 9a ?

fit a abf and mod my exhuast manifold ?

fit a bam and run it on the omex i have sat here ?

So debris has been clattered out the back by the big ends?

thats what it looks like , im getting the feeling that no2 detted and bent the rod sending it threw the block smashing the intermediate shaft and the bits of the shaft have been punched threw the back of the block or no2 piston seized bending the rod etc etc .

. i have left the crank and rods in and going to let a few more people see it in that state to get there ideas on it .

i really want to get to the bottom of this as i need a reliable engine . i missed to many track days last year and im getting the feeling its gonna happen again this year

Holy crap. Can detonation really cause this kind of damage? What do the pistons look like? Would be interesting to see the piston top surfaces.

    Just interested in this:

What particular knock sensor system are you using? Have you properly verified that it senses knock properly? Unfortunately knock detection is very complicated and there's no such thing as a system that you can just fit, set to the correct frequency and then just go.

cousin of mine, also done electronics degree but is mechanic by trade made a box that plugs in a ear piece that isolated the audio from a knock sensor
he liked to tune cars by ear as a backup to any sensor !
