020 & 02A/J lightened + balanced flywheels
Hi all,
I've been lightening and balancing flywheels for forum members on here now for the last few years with good results, both being used in daily drivers and also on the track scene, and would like to offer my services on a more public level.
I can lighten/balance (and reface if necessary) flywheels for both 020 rod change and 02A cable change gearboxes (4 cylinder and 6 cylinder).
The main benefit is increased acceleration and engine liveliness due to the decrease in rotational mass.
There has been mention of a decrease in torque but from personal experience and feedback from people I've done flywheels for, any loss in torque has not been an issue.
Here are some before and after pics of both 020 and 02a flywheels.
020 Std. Weight 5.5kg approx:
020 lightened 3.2kg:
02A standard 9.5kg:
02A lightened from 4.3kg, without ring gear / 4.9kg with ring gear:
This is the lightest I can go, and wouldn't go lighter.
Normal lightened weights are usually between 5-6kg dependent on how 'clean' the casting is.
Without ring gear:
Price for both 020 and 02A flywheels is £69.
Price includes lightening/balancing (and refacing if necessary) of the flywheel and return postage (standard parcels) to mainland UK.
Turn around is usually 5-7 days dependent on what time of the week I receive the flywheel. If I have an exchange one here I can normally get it back in the post right away, although I don't normally stock finished items.
Any interest please PM me on here and I will be in touch asap. I'm on here quite often so you'll receive a reply within a day usually.
Thanks for looking.
Mart.

its in my mk3 that does really silly mileage. the "drop in torque" is a myth
that plus a flowed throttle body got my personal best 0-60 down from 7s to 6.6s

Here's one i have had already from Hotgolf and proof of the weight saving.
New Modified Flywheel on the Left and Standard on the right.

Standard Flywheel Weight
New flywheel weight big weight loss.
Excellent work and Service, well worth the money.

Yes you can machine the surface. If it's got hot spots(most often have) you'll need to use a descent tip ( boron or ceramic are best if you can get them) and take it nice and slow. Too fast and it'll vibarte, or push off leaving the hot spot raised.

Rebuilt my box and lightened my flywheel. Top job!
Zero problems with it apart from the fact i didnt torque my flywheel bolts up correctly and they came loose 18 months on and thats after some MAJOR track abuse. lol.
My car had zero drop in torque. Still runs 230bhp and 280lbs/ft. :)
Some pics of mine...

After
Lightened vs. DMF
Freshly built box with quiafe diff fitted...

Obligatory silly questions time-
Why did VW make them so big & heavy in the first place?
Are these ok to use on an otherwise standard EV engine?
Thanks

in essence....
#1#
you will find a lighter wheel is easier to stall than a heavier one due to the reduced inertia. the weight helps you preserve the momentum of the wheel thus making it easier to operate/engage the clutch.
#2#
yes it will be fine on an otherwise standard engine. basically the flywheel is able to accelerate/decelerate quicker once lightened and may also be able to rev heigher. **this is of course limited by the other components of the engine**
