Erm.... it would appear that my mk1 might not be quite as standard as I've let on. I had some running problems recently, so I went to a local rolling road/bosch specialist to get it tuned properly. Apparently I've got 135bhp at the flywheel at 5900rpm. Chap was scratching his head as it appears to be a bog standard engine (well obviously!) with standard manifolds. He knows the figure is reasonably accurate because a standard mk2 valver was on before me with 142bhp. He reckons I've got a different cam and a gas flowed head and internals. Now what do I do!!! Explains why my car keeps up with stuff that a mk1 isn't really supposed to though I guess! Cheers, Drew. Edited by: drew
Even more "embarressing" - you've made a spelling mistake! So all those head-to-heads with mk4s, XR3is etc were rigged Cheers, Greg.
Quick - Sort the brakes!! And we all thought you were telling porkies when you were beating all sort of mean machinery
I always wondered why you seemed to beat so many cars that I wouldn't be able to in my old MK1 (proper standard engine) . Now I know why. Well, if you want it to be truely standard, remove the head and cam, sell it for some spare cash, and then buy a standard head and cam. Choice is yours at the end of the day.
sell the head and cams, and buy standard ones coudl it be you don't hammer your mk1? and they proved with age and being looked after that they got more powerfull? lol 30bhp more powerfull?!
False advertising Drew, get em off and stick some standard stuff in, those cars are beaten, leave it at that and delete this. Sensitive information like this should not get to XR3.co.uk or whatever it's called.......
well mine is standard and made 123 on stealth RR, so thats not a bad mark up...must save up for a cam and a bit of polishing!
Well, the odd thing is... I have a receipt for a brand new head from VW for 900 back in 1995 (long before I owned the car). I wonder if this was a stock VW head (the receipt is vw paper) or something a bit more interesting. There is nothing else in the paperwork to indicate it's been tuned at all, although it did come with a supersprint exhaust, ATE disks and boge shocks/dampers when I bought it and the receipts for these items were in the paperwork. Odd eh. Trouble is, if I detune it back to standard now, it will feel as flat as a pancake by comparision. What a dilemma! 160 bhp/tonne! Cheers, Drew. Edited by: drew
Maybe time to "downgrade" the superiority of standard mk1 GTi? MANY words have been written about how a mk1 will slay almost anything. A MODDED mk1 will, but who knows about standard!!
