I've heard in the past that Some Seat ABFs had lighter hydraulic lifters than those fitted to other cars. I have no real idea if it's true or not, but if so, it would make sense to build an upgraded engine with the lighter items. I've just weighed some lifters that came out of a Seat ABF engine I bought with a jumped cambelt. they've been sat in a plastic box for a year or so, and a fair bit of oil has come out of them, but I have no idea if they're empty. 68g was a fairly common weight, with some weighing a little bit more. Anyone know what a KR one weighs, and if 68g is probably a light one or a heavy one?
Concur on Seat lifters, thats what I 'heard' too, but in the last while Im slowly learning to believe no-one but yourself when it comes to weights/testing. The only way to weigh these babies, is strip them fully, wash in petrol, and then weigh. Even when main body is empty, the plunger will still be full, or_maybe not... Theres 8 parts in total incl the steel spring ring that holds plunger into main bucket body. I feel its the only way in order to get a concrete ref table together Mike?
I have a complete hydro tappet at 62.7g This is as removed from an early engine so still some oil about and in it. 1cc of oil is approx a gramme so it is only going to add approx 4cc to overall weight if you guess the volume the tappet holds. Empty hydro bucket from mk4 engine, presume later lighter as the design has less volume for oil reservoir in tappet 38.2g Two small sleeves / pistons that make up the guts of the tappet 10.2g That makes 48.4g but needs the spring a ball and collar added, probably about 3g max. Then add 3g for oil makes a total of 55.4g. If this were an 8v you would have the benefit of saving knocking on for 500g!!
hear goes mike, all second hand with oil drained for a few months 80.4 grams came from a early kr head 027 78.6 grams came from kr head027 67.7 grams came from kr head 051 63.2grams came from kr head 48.7 grams came from later abf head 051, may be different manufactures

I think this shows that the ones Trackcab and the mk4 style I have shown are lighter than the early KR ones. But agree, need stripping to be 100% on weights. I am going solid lifter anyway.
Well I say solid lifter, actually just knocking the guts out of the hydro tappets and inserting the parts from other tappets to create the clearance required. There a small differences in the lengths of internal parts in the 8v petrol, 8v diesel, 16v petrol etc, enough lengths to build up a shimming range when using certain base circle cams. Off topic though. Mike, you need the later tappets.
agree too that they need bee totaly drained and washed , but it does give you a fair idear to which is the lightest, so easy choice then , so a bit like pickamix sweets , pick out from a big box full then weight , that one will do , .
I remember weighing my standard ABF lifters against some new SEAT ABF lifters, and the SEAT parts were lighter, for sure. I weighen them offshore, on the lab digital scales, both wet. I'll try and dig out the figures.

Here we go: These are the lightweight ones: Std VW ABF = 71.2g SEAT 'Lightweight' ABF = 50.8g Out of interest, I have these too: Std ABF retainer = 18.2g Ti Retainers = 10.8g
I weighed a couple more sets when i was down the workshop. I had some KR ones (were in a 1986 head I bought from Deako years ago, but no idea if they were original to the head). 80g A second set of ABF Seat lifters - from a head I bought years ago - 63g. I would have assumed they were the lightweight ones if it wasn't for this thread I've got another ABF head, but it's got cams in it, so they're staying put. Cheers, all

I like this thread, but i am a bit geeky when it comes to weight reduction. Just weighed a number of tappets from an 027 E head at ~80.2 grams each. Pulled a tappet from an ABF 051 D head i thought was from a Golf and weighed 49.2 grams. Both were not stripped down so must have a bit of oil in.
Mine came from SEAT. If you search on VWVortex you'll find an INA part number for them...which will be cheaper to source through in INA dealer than any VAG parts counter. I think USRT in the states do them too at decent money as I think that's where 12valver bought some for his VR6
