    195/45 on an 8j rim isn`t that excessive, as you say, I ran exactly that on my Mk2 for 5/6 years with no problems whatsoever. And it was never driven `carefully`... ;)

    I guess its fairly obvious that deliberately "deforming" a tyre in any way is going to firstly reduce its grip (I remember hearing that tyre stretching was first used in the world of drifting where they don't want too much grip) and secondly put stresses onto the tyre that it wasn't intended to take, neither is really condusive to safety.
    Having said that it may well be the case that a decent quality stretched set of matching tyres with good tread are safer than eastern european budget tyres worn down to the legal minimum.

    Personally I'd prefer not take chances with the only things keeping me stuck to the road just for the sake of a silly faddy fashion scene statement but thats just me & I'm so uncool that I don't even have german pressed plates

    This is beyond wrong;

    [IMG]

    That`s a 165 on an 8j, and apart from looking f*cking stupid, it is quite clearly dangerous, and I would hope the police would have something to say if they saw it.

    This is a 195 on an 8j;

    [IMG]

    Personally that`s as far as I would go, and I don`t think there would be an issue running them.

    Old school Minis on Minilites or Wellers have been run with similar small levels of stretch for years with no issues;

    As have Lowriders on 14" Daytons (typically 175 on a 7j)

    And why he rolled his old silver Mk2 into a drainage ditch and blamed it on stretched tyres...:lol:

    Oh Andy, tell me it isn't true. :lol:

    What's the next revelation, you're running the incorrect offset of wheels? :o

    Pfft. Kept running the same wheels on the next GTI, and currently running the same wheels on the Winter GTI with 195/45/15 Toyo T1R tyres

    Nothing wrong with them [8D]

    Tyres that fit > Tyres that don't fit.

    Friend had a Mk3 VR6, 8j et30 rims with 195/45/15 tyres and one came off the rim, I would say its mostly down to having them well fitted with a good seal and maintaining the correct tyre pressure, thou as said drifters do it to decrease grip so doing it on a understeering fwd car is pretty dumb and will make the car handle worst.

    All that said I have 195/45/16 on my 7.5j borbets, came with the wheels so not my choice but its the most stretch I would ever want and it defenatly has a negative effect on the handling.

    Andy, I had never seen those pics before, looks like a moderately lucky escape!

    195/45 on a 7.5" is not a stretch, It is within the tyres specified range.

    Stretch is when you go outwith that.
