On the heels of the 16-valve outputs thread, I've now compiled a stack of data on the original Golf GTI 8-valve engine. Production (UK, Europe, USA, Canada), tuner engine packages, all the way through to works rally, rallycross, Super Vee and F3. I've been working on it on & off since mid-November, and hope it turns out to be as interesting, if not more than than 16v version, due to the sheer variety once you start scratching the surface. I initially started with the early non-GTI engines, but there are so many of them (rumoured 50+) that I'll add just the key ones somewhere down the line. Thanks to danster, romain and various others for info on some of the more quirky 8v derivatives, plus also the Crossflow. This thread is definitely the excuse the CGTI grey matter collective needs to pull all the data together on not only the Crossflow, but the alloy blocked 06A castings, doubtless where we'll see a move towards more conversions in the future I'll start with the original GTI production engines, and then will add the other data once I've checked it through. All this info is from every place I can trawl, VW books, the 'net etc, but as before, I hope it's correct, but I don't pretend to be the last word. Don't hesitate to point out any errors, and they'll be fixed. Link to 4 cyl bore & stroke combinations. The 1700s The 1700s are a curious engine never seen in the UK, but were the critical source of '1800' cranks used by the tuners to increase 1600cc GTI engine sizes. The 1700 has been seen in USA Rabbits, but originate from the VW Iltis, a 4WD military-type vehicle, which has the regular VW 4-cyl engine married to an early incarnation of the Quattro drivetrain. Sometimes they are cast with '1.7' in the crankcase. the TSR Brands hatch has a bore of 82.5 and a stroke of 92.8 using a diesel crank, same as a 3A bubble block audi engine basically. CR is unchanged from std aparantly according to Rob at TSR. As for power, mine was crap and i had to have it rebuilt and the CR setting right for the cam they supply in the engine, getting me 16hp more and 22lb/ft more torque.....wouldnt recommend them but thats prob not for this thread!

well Oettinger was offering options on two engine base the 1.6 /110bhp and the 1.5 /70bhp lets not forget the turbo options which was a big trend at the time schrick , rinspeed , iresa , and this american company but the name sleept out of my mind for the 16 valves options well.... of course Oettinger again , drake and graff I got all the numbers for oettinger some infos on the drake but not much on the graff and there also was one french tuner which was also a big player as he also make race some mk1 in monte carlo in 1979 cresson which was offering a 1.9 option competing directly with oettinger and other name named earlier
Thanks Romain, hopefully more info to add later. @ Funky Diver, cheers for the PM & the post. Crossflow info now updated with more.
No worries... I'll measure the valve sizes on my AKL head later this evening once I've murdered/put my kids to bed
AKL valve sizes are: inlet 39.5mm and exhaust 33mm. 7mm stem, hydro head length of 91mm. No need for Funky to murder his kids now.
