My router is playing up, or the laptop. I switch the router off at the plug when I'm not using it. So when I want to use it again, back on and the laptop notices it's there. The last few days, the laptop has been struggling to get internet access, so it fires up with just local access to the router, but no www. Why could this be? Do I need to bin it and stop wasting my time, or re-format the laptop (again) because debugging it will take up the rest of my life? So far today, I've been rinsing the Vodafone Dongle!
Dont switch the router off! They take no power so its pointless really. Technical bit... My guess is its an ADSL router & modem in one. By switching it off you are cutting your ADSL connection so when you turn it back on it has to make a new connection by dialing up your host again. This could take a while if your host is set to manually accecpt new connections. They are all designed to be connected 24/7. I know with my virgin fibre connection, if i get dissconnected due to a power cut etc it can sometime take up to an hour to reconnect to the internet. Local connection is instant as you say.
Hmmm, it has never usually been a problem. I'll just try disconnecting it again, as it doesn't seem to cure itself. It isn't redialling in other words.
I'm going to outside for a few breaths, take a couple of aspirin, and see whether this looks feasible!
Haha Type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. Hopefully a login box should come up. I guess the user/pass will be admin in both boxes...
Your router ip will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Type them in to IE, and one of them will bring up a log in page. Log in. If neither of those work, try the following: Click Start, and type Run in the search box. Click the Run entry. In the resulting window, type CMD, and press enter. This will bring up a black box with a Dos prompt. Type ipconfig and press enter. Copy and paste the results here.
I must have changed it at some point, but can't seem to get anything to work. I can't copy / paste with it in Dos? Lots of 'media disconnected' statements and some IPv6, IPv4, subnet addresses What am I looking for?
That is 192.168.0.1 so the second last digit is a zero instead of the 1 entered which brought up the password screen I couldn't get past.
Had a similar problem with our router, was working fine over Lan, but the wifi was playing up, so reset it from the setup screen, and it then wouldnt reconnect to the internet. had to call the provider and they did somthing which had it back up within 5 mins. The router setup user name and password are normally, admin, admin admin, password admin, (blank) admin, 1234 (blank), admin (blank),(blank) If none of these work you may have changed the password, you can reset the router to default with the reset pin, but will need to have your asdl username phone number password and settings to put back in.
Should have a status tab, will show something like internet connection status, cable status, network connection status, upstream rate, downstream rate. should be able to see whats wrong from that lot.
Without posting everything up, as I don't know what's public and what's not, there's alot of "data", but not a lot of "here is the fault".
these are the bits of interest, Its showing a good connection speed (uoload and download) which indicates its connected to the internet.
Hmmm, but it isn't connected. I'm connected via a Dongle. The wireless is showing "local only" (waving mouse at bottom RHS of screen).
Have you got a network cable handy? could try connecting to the router with a cable, see if that works. Othewise I'd suggest reseting the router from the setup screen, (should be a restart or reboot option somewhere), As it resets youll loose wifi connection, then should come back up, as it does, log back in to the setup and see what the modem status says. Should go through something like initialising, connecting, online. A software reset is a bit friendlier than pulling the plug. But as matt said, they can take a while to connect, depending on the provider
those connection stats dont mean its connected to the internet, only that it has found an adsl line and is synced up to the other end. it may be username/password for adsl is incorrect or some other issue. just fyi i had my o2 adsl router hooked up to a talk talk adsl line, it synced up great 6m down and 1m up but obviously I had no internet As above try not to unplug the router if you can help it, my router used to play up from time to time and needed to be unplugged to get it working again. about 1 time in 10 it would completely reset so I would have to reinput all the settings! is the router supplied the one given to you by the adsl provider, or is it one you had to buy yourself? did your provider supply any details with the line such as ip adresses, dns, gateway, user/pass etc on a bit o paper?
