This is my method of making a VWMS type front upright at home with hacksaw, files and a home made hand 'Shaping Machine'!

    Part #1

The bearing was pulled out till it was approx 1mm below the surface of the boss.

The boss filed down until it was perfectly level with the edge of the bearing.
This will be the datum face for the rest of the work.

The relative dimensions of the periphery of the boss, the egde of the flange and the tapped holes are:
    Dimensions removed 14/11/11

    A template was made.

The flange painted white, and the edge marked out.

Hacksaw most of the meat off close to the line.

Turn it on edge, paint the edge and mark a line from the top face.

    Hacksaw down the line.

    Hacksaw off the waste.

    The flange edge was re-marked.

    And more hacksawing perfromed.

Sorry Danny, my arms are not in the least bit sore![:D]

    Part #2

Outside calipers were set. An allen key was used, but a Derwent Drawing pencil will do just as well!

    Dimensions removed.

File down the bosses for mounting the dust shield. They sould be down to a good 31mm below the boss datum face to clear the file as the flange is filed flat.

The actual dimension to the mounting flange face, from the datum face, will be covered in the net installment. It needs a daved sketch for clarity.

Now. Work your way around the boss, where it meets the flange, with a file, to give a shoulder diameter of just over 80mm. The calipers should not quite go onto the filed shoulder at present.

    Gurds.

I spent many hours, as an apprentice, standing at a 'Fitting' bench, doing just this sort of thing.

I'll post photos of some of my apprentice work. I still use a lot of it.

    I made the calipers.

I like it! I had to make stuff during my engineering course at collage too but the work at the fitting bench was limited to cutting out and filing perfect shapes out of mild steel. More time was spent on learning how to use the lathe and mill and how to recognise incorrect speeds.

    Kind of you folks!

    But.

    I am not a legend:

    'I AM LEGEND'

The last sane man on Earth!

Great book, if you have not read it. Far far better than the US movies:
    'The Omega Man' (Chuck Heston)
    'I am Legend' (Will Smith)
'The Last Man on Earth' (Vince Price)
    'I Am Omega' (Mark Dacasos)

Quite right sparrow. I did phase #2 when it was too dark to stay on the roof, slating.

It's the car that gave the VWMS Mk 2s their front hubs, wheel beargings, and CV joints, up to at least 1989.

It appears to have donated the brakes to the early cars as well!
