Am looking to buy a Vr6, but have seen some vr engines described as OBD1 and some as OBD2. Was wondering what the difference was??
Amongst other differences, the OBD2 tend to be more powerful as stock, despite VW quoting the same power figure (174bhp).
Other things were changed at the same time as the engine management so generally OBD2 cars will have 288mm brakes instead of 280mm, different throttle body and cosmetic differences (early VR6s had the same textured arches, side stips & bumpers as the gti... later ones didnt)
nah, the obd2 being more powerful is a myth... the vr6 owners club's rolling road days have proved this. a healthy obd1 could be more powerful than a healthy obd2. all depends on the individual car, worth noting that every single vr6 tested was higher than 174bhp! they added a few other updates along with uprated management, such as different side repeaters, bigger brakes, they lost the arches, added fully colour coded bumpers. only other engine difference i can think of is that they reduced the top timing chain to singel row (obd1 are double row, but eat the top tensioner runner). for vr6 info visit vr6oc.com
Thanks for the quick reply guys.has anyone owned a obd1 and obd2, is there any performance difference? also when u say 92-95 obd1 95-97 obd2 anything up to a 95 plate is obd1 and everything 95 plated and onwards is obd2 correct??
M plate and before is usually OBD1, N plate and after is usually OBD2 (I say usually because with VW theres always a few oddities!) The distributor thing isnt an OBD1/2 thing... I think coilpacks were introduced around 93/94
so the obd1 and obd2 changes took place across the vr6 range. ie will the same dates will apply to vento and corrado VRs?? Edited by: xplosiv
yeah, didn't the corrado stop being made in '95? the obd switch is across the whole vw range i think. certainly all mkIII's.
oh, yeah, and early obd1's had a distributer, later had coilpack (on golf's it only '92 and very very early '93 cars that had dizzy, my '93 is coilpack)
Obd1 & obd2 vr6 powr info Help?? Hi, Can someone confirm if there a power difference between the vr6 OBD1 set up & the OBD2 set up? I have heard things that one has more bhp than the other? is this true? Chrz
BHP is the same although OBD2 cars always seem slightly more responsive due the the better management. The Corrado 2.9 lump and MK3 Highlines obviously got slightly higher figures but any VR engine can be brought up to 200+ Bhp fairly easily by just de-restricting the air intake, VSR / Shrick Manifold and Cams can shift it to 220BHP with more low down torque. The main difference is MPG, with OBD1 one you get between 30-35 on a good day but with OBD2 you can achieve 35-38MPG - pretty good going for an engine of nearly 3 Litres!
obd,stands for on board diagnostics does it not? so how is that related to power,surely its just a difference in diag between the two management systems,not well up on v.r's so im just asking out of interest my two mates (who are brothers) have v.r's.one has obd1 and the other has an obd2,theyve both drove each others and said theres no evidential difference,they feel the same
You are correct. OBD relates to emissions monitoring. OBD1 is the US EPA emissions monitoring std which ran to 94 then in 95 more parameters and calibration functions where included and this std became OBD2. OBD2 also runs of K line. For example all US/CDN MK3s or Corrados have a MILs, this was not a requirement for Euro vehicles as was 3 HEGO sensors, under floor catalysers and so on. In Europe most of the these functions relating to US OBD are switched off! But the remainder can still be accessed via a K line. The remainder does not make the vehicle "OBD2". Many of the european vehicles like Merc, BMW, VAG and Opel communicate with the same protocols after 95 hence the rise of handheld diagnostic readers. You many find though that generic US "OBD2" tools do not work on many european vehicles due to differences in data sets. In 95, Europe had EU1 emission stds and you find some of the hardware that benefitted US federal emission monitoring, fuel economy and emissions became std euipment on euro vehicles for our drive cycles. This OBD2 vs OBD1 nonsense is starting to creep into ABF 16v types too. See how myths are generated. There should be no drive difference (or small torque deltas) between a 93MY MK3 VR6 and a 96MY MK3 VR6. The later MK3 VR6 may have the abilty to adjust individual batches of injectors and coil towers to compensate for manifold tract differences over time bearing in mind that these engines are designed to run at stoich during the majority of load conditions except WOT and high rpm. Perhaps I need to run a test on two of these on the dyno to prove the OBD1/2thing is another imported myth.
