The diesels have a windage tray to stop oil surge incorporated into the sump gasket, does this fit a 16v block?

If not who sells them for 16vs?

We're going to Mallory next month Paul, it has the longest corner in the UK (Gerrads) Ian Carvell was saying that a number of engines fail from oil surge around there.

Of course If I ever get some A048s the greater lateral grip will make the problem worse.

Just put a bit more oil in it! any excess will burn off.

I thought a windage tray was more to stop power loss from the crank whipping up the oil and baffles were for oil surge?

The 16v has plastic baffles as standard (but you knew that). The diesel tray does fit the 16v, unless you have a longer throw crank.

dont think the deisel tray and the baffles fit together, and over filling it can cause airation of the oil-lots of bubbles in it which is equally bad for your bearings,

    sorry thats not much help

I bought mine from TSR but its actually a VW part that is the gasket also so likley its the same part, i may be able to dig out the number for you as i have a photo of it somewhere

I am using a TSR baffled sump and 8v spreader/baffle and VW windage plate in mine, TSR sumps are crap as you have to grind of metal to get them to fit past the old pump and the paint comes off and blocks your strainer , which was all very nice [xx(]

So that daft plastic thing which clips to the oil pick up has to be removed for the windage tray to fit?

Yeah fit a 8v spreader/baffle as that much smaller that the 16v item baffle

Anyway for coners the baffled sump is what you need, the windage plate is really for braking and acceration i always thought

Thhinking about it, the windage tray won't help oil surge during cornering, as HTC said above [:s]

There's a Schrick alloy baffled sump on Ebay - pity it's in the states tho.

My Corrado g60 had a sort of windage tray that clips onto the oil pump pickup which also had baffles on it. Its was a standard item that vw put on them(i think) from memory its something like 25x20cm in size

You need a baffled sump anyway as the windage tray is to keep the crank from whisking the oil and creating air bubbles, thats where the name "windage tray" came from.

I remember seeing a linki to where someone had made their own baffled sumpwith a hinged part that allows flow one way, but stops it another - why not make one?

Gary have you ever actually had oil surge on yours?

I've never got it, and although not the best looking item I think the clip on combined baffle/windage plate that comes standard should do a half reasonable job.

so are we suggesting that the std 16v *baffled sump* might well be up to the job?
