I think you'll be looking at a minimum of steel internals a knife edged custom light weight crank custom rods pistons a Schrick solid lifter head in combination with 304+ cams (Schricks)running to 8.5-9k
    oh and TB'S independant mapping

    and much more

    Hi

IMO the main problem you are going to find is someone reliable who
knows VW 16V's to build it for you - most of the bits are available
relatively easily - but what bits to use.....

The power you want is definately achievable with your budget and if you
do this, I would have staged payments and the builder dont get most of
the cash until you have dyno sheets to prove power / torque (and at this
kind of money you should be able to dictate what shape of power curve
    you want (ish))

You are right on the edge of needing a steel crank or not - a stock forged
crank is good for 8600rpm if in good condition and balance checked -
1200 extra if you need a steel one. A1 quality block - if any doubt at all,
    get a new one.

Steel rods - loads of possibilities (arrow, eurospec, puter, carillo etc)- get
some fairly light ones as some of them are for turbo engines are are
much more than you will need

Pistons - a compression hike would be useful - forged would be nice -
loads of vendors (je, ross, accralite, wiseco etc). May need pockets for hot
cams. If your not racing and capacity limited, 83.5mm gives a useful
    capacity hike.

Fasteners and bearings - highest quality available throughout - arp bolts
are good as are genuine VAG bearings

Head - now then, big skill time - gas flowed (but how) maybe with bigger
valves (valves from who and how much bigger). Solid lifter conversion
(solid lifters from several vendors, arrow, schrick etc), machining for high
    lift cams may be needed

Cams - lots of options - schrick are good but so are cat and newman -
going to need a pretty wild set but this is where the skill and experience
of the engine builder comes in, matching the cam spec to compression,
porting, valve sizes etc - its the overall package that has to work in
    combination

Ancillaries - a good oil pump / baffled sump / windage plate or dry sump

Induction - TB's - various designs and sizes, you are going to need 45's
as a minium, the bore dictates the type of power in combination with the
    other engine parts

ECU - loads of options again, pick one where there is local experience to
you as you will need a few remaps to get everything right

Getting 240bhp out of a VW 16V isn't easy - but very doable.

Your alternative to finding a builder, buying bits and hoping it all works is
to buy an off the shelf engine, with dyno sheets to prove power. There are
a few guys in europe where you can do this - and if your really serious,
for 8K I'll get you one.

    Cheers

    Rob
