    Hi guys,

Probably a stupid question but how can you tell if the inlet is a 42 or 50mm without taking the thing to pieces!? I know there is some debate about how good a 50 really is but its gotta be worth a try!

Anyone know what parts are required to convert, or is it a simple bolt on job?

On that note anyone know of a good vw tuners in the North West i.e Cumbria/Lancs im sick of all the mickey mouse ppl we have up here! [:s]

    Thanks as always,

Simple bolt on job. The 50mm has runners that decrease in size around the spark plug holes. The 40mm ones are straight. You'll see what I mean when you see them yourself.

Cheers guys, after reading a few of the topics on here about the 50mm im nearly at the conclusion that i may already have one! [:s] Seeing as though there appears to be no real way of telling if you have a 50 or not i think im just gona have to take the inlet off and mearsure it! People have spoke about the colour of the writing and year of the car but to be honest theres that much sw*pping and changing theres no real way to tell! Unless someone wants to correct me of course :p

Here we go  I recently fitted a 41mm manifold (really early golf) to my parents standard 16v golf as i sold there 50mm 1 [:$] .The car feels alot more aggressive now and suits the way my parents drive HOWEVER,Ive got a 50mm on my rado and it feels alot better over the 42mm that was on it originally ;) The moral of my story is......who cares,im gettin itbs soon

    chaps,

I finally got to the bottom of it and i got a 50mm :p
no wonder it pulls like a train past 3500! I think the definative answer is -

    41.5mm - nipple on No 1 runner
42mm - straight runners ( no nipple or narrowing around the plugs)
50mm - narrowing around the plugs

This would be regardless of colour of writing on the top of the inlets! [:D]

the conclusion that everybody came to on the last thread on this matter was it wasn't worth changing from a 42mm to a 50mm ;) is that correct? i run a 42mm and the engine feels very good at low revs which is how i like it, others may differ [:D]

    Nearly right.
41mm- nipple on No 1 runner
42.5mm- straight runners ( no nipple or narrowing around the plugs)
50mm - narrowing around the plugs

Nearly right oh well  budding newbie veedubber here :p The 50mm does pull like a train through the top end but to be honest 30mph in 4th is still more than possible [:s]

The reason the 50mm pulls well at the top end is the fact it makes the mid range worse

I've still got my 50mm on though. [:$]
