hello, I am looking to get the head ported on my 16v mk2 and instal cams to go allong with my 4branch, i need cams that will still allow me to drive the car everyday, what would you recomend? Cheers Steven
If it is still an 1800cc (KR) then Id stick with the standard cams..or Schrick 260s as an absolute maximum. Kent 1602Rs are another set to consider Hotter cams are best left to increased capacity engines, where the reduction in low down torque is offset by the increased CC. A flowed head/4 branch alone should see your KR to 150+BHP no problem anyhow Edited by: chrismc
So everyone thinks for fast road use id be wiser sticking with the std cams or exhaust cam mod, and getting the head ported, also would i be wise changing the final drive or would that make it bad on motorway runs? cheers Steven

Yep, first things first get the car set up properly by someone who understands k-jet. Unfortunately the lower final drive will make motorway journeys a ball ache as at 80mph you will be doing around 5000rpm That suggestion was more of a wind up (in jest I may add) on Tub's behalf to the guys on here with their lumpy Schrick sticks Check out the 16v feature in next month's Golf+ Our day at Bruntingthorpe Edited by: GVK
Slicks - i still think wheelspin more than road tyres from standing starts. Final drive can be done for less than the price of 2nd hand Schricks. Diet - Are you forgetting the roll cage But, back to the post gentlemen. I would say stick with standard sticks and a flowed head onan 1800. Then look at going 2.0 for a really nice road car. Don't go 3.9FD on a road car... it'll drive you mad unless you like screaming about everywhere. Personally i wouldn't go 4-Branch. A lot of money for no proven gain IMO. Edited by: Tubthumped
Right, I have a 1.8 16v with aTSR 4 branch and Jetext competion system. Up until last week I was running TSR's kent reground std cams, don't know the profiles but 265 rings a bell. I had a head gasket fail, so swapped over to my spare head, which has standard 16v cams. My car feels slightly more torquey up to about 3500, but after 4500 it is quite a bit slower, feels as if I have a couple of passengers on board. I would say for a 1.8 16v, get a set of mild cams, they are perfectly usable everyday, and they do give you more top end. The low down torque in my car was exactly the same as it was when standard, the cams just gave it top end, so there really was no downside to fitting "slightly hotter cams"
Who are you kidding - you reckon hot mich slicks grip less than road tyres - they are why you won the 0-60 - they are much worse when cold but when they have had 3 or 4 laps hooning around to get them sticky, they are fantastic. I'd watch ya gearbox now if I were you Rob Edited by: RobT
Whatever, obviously the entire sprinting scene have all got it wrong - I can consistently beat road modified cars (on road tyres, often shaved S02's which are well sticky) with my car on cold soft slicks to 64ft - margin is 0.3-0.5secs usually and would be more if they were warmer - and power to weights are very similar - vs lots of 205's with pukka skip brown engines etc Rob Edited by: RobT
Cold soft slicks - yes. But rock hard michelin slicks - wheelspun through 1st 2nd and chirped in 3rd if i didn't treat them gently. I'm not doubting your experience or knowledge on sprinting Rob.. but i got less wheelspin at Santa Pod on Toyo road tyres than i did at Brunters on slicks
Tubs you had a good 3 full laps of hooning on a hot day, that= about 12miles & with fast bends & full bore standing starts getting heat into the tyres there is no doubt ya slicks were sticky as feck & I felt 'em when you came back in & indeed properly end of track day sticky. You just know Ian v would have had ya if he brought along his slicks .........
