Mornin' all, I have got a KR block being completely rebuilt and overbored. I have heard it suggested that, as well as the usual main and big end bearings, the intermediate shaft bearings should be replaced as well. After a bit of scratching around, I learn that the intermediate shaft bearings are available from C&R and they must be reamed in. I spoke to the chappie at the machine shop about this. He checked the intermediate shaft for play and reckoned it was fine. Considering the work involved, I think his opinion generally was that it's best leaving well alone unless they actually show signs of wear. Opinions please? Thanks, Trev.
I'm rebuiding a kr block at the moment as a 1.9. I'm leaving the intermediate bearings as they are as the engine was perfectly ok when i started the project, i don't think it had done many miles. Just to add another question to this topic, how much endfloat is ok for the intermediate shaft? There is a bit on the one i have and i have checked a few other engines and they are all the same.
i left my intermediate shaft bearings too...the chap where i had my blocked honed said there was no play and no need, however i did see some horror pics on here about worn intermediate shaft bearings
99% of VWs dont need new int shaft brgs but I have seen a few where the bearing material has broken up, the KS bearings are a finished white metal bearing and dont need any machining at all. Im not sure what C&R supply but I wouldnt trust them to put the top on a bottle of milk. If fitting the new KS bearings they need to be fitted with the type of tool thats used for fitting the full type cam bearings as if not they will distort, thats why C&R say theres need machining, they probably distort the bearings while fitting them
As Motorhead said they dont need machining after fitting and the reason I rebuilt the KR engine was due to bearing disentegrating. Not the best of pics. Putting them in or out is easy but I had to turn a few parts to ensure they pressed in without damaging them or distorting them and also be careful if you remove/replace the pulley make sure you do this with shaft out as forcing down on shaft whilst inserted may damage the bearing. On inspection of intermediate shaft I found the cast/un-machined part inbetween two journals was way out of true by a fair amount which may have contributed to bearing failure.I had to get the high points ground down to balance it out. I think that if you have stripped down your block it would be worth changing them if for piece of mind only but if wear is minimal then I don`t suppose it would do any harm to leave them either.
Nah i'm afraid not. Still had enough of owning VWs. My brother bought a valver, a really clean car but the engine is sick so i'm building up an old engine i had in the garage for spares. I'm changing brands for something that revs and has a LSD in the gearbox. As standard.
