Sounds like you are talking about the WUR modification that can be done to 16V GTI engines.

All I know is that Vince at Stealth does this modification. It involves modifying the control pressure regulator (also called the Warm Up Regulator, or WUR; because fuel richening on cold starts is one of the functions this unit performs) so that it reduces control pressure even more when you open the throttle, hence giving a richer mixture when you hammer it. In other words, a fairly cheap route to some extra BHP. Not had it done myself yet though.

That's how I understand it anyway. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

they lower your hot fuel pressure to 48psi at idle..i asked em last saturday

it makes it run slightly richer

Nic, I fitted my 9A 2 litre and it pinked like hell [xx(] and was flatter than a phart.

Took the car to Stealth for this mod and the timing set up properly , stopped it pinking and gained 21bhp  139 > 160!

    Torque was far better too

Since then I've been back and seen 171bhp/151 lb/ft :)

Usually a healthy 1800 16v will see 155bhp with this mod done.

If your car is a Belgian import, you've probably got a PL 16v with a CAT + lambda sensor and KE Jetronic rather than the catless KR we get with no lambda...

If you have, this mod won't apply to your engine.

Hiya mate, your a mine of information as usual!

Yup mine is a Belgium import, i don't have a Cat converter though, the centre box on the exhaust has just been replaced due to it dropping off on the way home!

So i presume its a normal KR. Had an MOT today and it was running quite lean so they've adjusted the mixture and it revs better now but the engines still quite tight so its not a real flyer at the moment hence me want to know if this can be done!

    Any idea on price Gary?

    Cheers

    Nic

Do you know if there's a black plastic box with wires coming out of it on the metering head ( the bit where the fuel pipes come out of to the injectors, behind the rhs head lamp?)

Vince charges 45 an hour for the rolling road time, I think it cost me 88 as he took about 1.75 hours, best money I've spent on the car TBH!

One thing that can effect the power on the 16v is the timing belt being 1-2 teeth out, seen a few cases of a 16v that has no pull after 5000rpm and the belt has been incorrectly fitted

Still got the original timing belt on mine so i doubt its out. New belt and tensioner going on next week, just in case.

Yup the plastic box is there ok.

Right i'd best book it in then!

    Thanks again Gary.

This is the K-Jet metering head as fitted to a KR

Let me find a pic of a KE metering head, If you've got KE (with the black box) then you can't have the WUR mod done, as it doesn't have one.

PL cylinder head is more restrictive than a KR too I believe [xx(]

I'm almost positive thats the same as mine mate, i had the mixture adjusted earlier at the MOT as it was running lean and thats where they adjusted it from with an allen key.

You can adjust both KE and K-Jet with the 3mm allen key in the hole I'm pointing to ;)

It's whether it has a DPR [ differential pressure regulator] - (black box with wires coming out) on that part or not thats the problem.
