Which one is actually better?? According to the news clipping in the link above it should be the smaller 42mm. Anyone? I've got both (obviously, not one the car  ) and would liketo know which one is best to put back on...

I would use the 42mm for a road car, gives better mid range torque.

I've got one on mine :)

has anyone tried using the larger 50 mm top section (larger part) with the smaller 40mm bottom section for a best of both set up?

nononononnono, without some serious fettling to the manifolds that would be worse than the worst characteristics of each manifold rolled into one. There'd be a nasty step in the runners that would hinder airflow considerably.

There was a guy in the states who had a go at taking the best bits from each manifold and rolling them into one though. He got a 50mm manifold, shortened the runners a bit and welded the larger plenum from the 42mm manifold on to it. The results were OK, but not ground-breaking, didn't really look worth the effort (particularly considering the silly prices 50mm manifolds go for over there).

    Three sizes.
    41mm 42.5mm and 50mm.
Raised casting on No1 inlet for 41mm
    No casting mark on 42.5mm
    Irregular shape on 50mm.

I have 41mm on my 16V and it was noticeable difference mid range over 50mm.
Albeit it wasn`t setup properly either way.
