what size coolers do people use on their 2l valvers?

the vw motorsport catalogue i have lists a 19 row cooler.

mocal do 19row/146mm in two widths 115mm amd 235mm.

is this the size generally usedby the people on here?

when fitting do i have to remove the original vw oil cooler to allow the oil filter to fit when the sandwhich plate is installed?

    I use a 256mm by 13 row i think,
You can order the parts as a kit from Rally design or Demon tweaks or go direct to think auto

Here are some install pics of mine, i bought a sandwich plate with a stat in, usefull in the winter

I think a safe place for a cooler is infront of the rad, mine being at the front of the car not great (stone chips etc)

when fitting an aftermarket oil cooler, are you not suppose to loose the oe oil cooler and just join the 2 water pipes?

I guess you can loose the oil water cooler all together, but then it would be like a mk1 GTI in that it will take a long time to warm up. Keeping the existing cooler and adding the sandwich plate with a stat is great for cooling and near normal warmup.

The stat i think must do something around 74 degress, only my guess as thats the lowest temp i could ever record on oil temp

Mine was fitted behind a 4 spot grille but in a different place - as you look at the engine bay, it was sat shortside at the top (ie so it followed the length of the rad), on the right of the rad

I find that using both oil coolers helps to keep the coolent temperature down a bit too

the mocal oil cooler has a built in stat in the sandwich plate which works at 80deg, so until the oil has reached that temperature it wont go through the cooler, when i purchased mine i was advised to remove the oe cooler and join the 2 water pipes, only recieved it on thurs. and havnt fitted yet, and am now on 2 minds whether to keep the oe cooler...hmmmm, not sure

Always use a take off with a stat if poss most damage to engines takes place while the oil is comming up to temperature if you dont have a stat thhis will take longer. The oil cooler should always be mounted behind and as close as possible to the water rad or off to one side if there is space. Leaving the original pipes and cooler in place will be more effective. Idela temps to aim for are oil at 100 oC and water at 80 oC.

With that advice in mind, I would be wary of fitting an oil cooler without a stat to a standard engined car. In fact, all the valvers I have owned have never seen much more that 100 degrees on the oil. It does help if the coolant system is working properly. I put a pressure washer nozzle into the waterway entrances in my block to flush the years of crap out, and it made a difference in both of the temps.

IMO, its not good buying an oil cooler, a) if you dont use a stat, and b) if you dont ensure that your cooling system is working efficiently. They are linked together in how they operate

I keep seeming to find something else to occupy my time [:$]

One day it'll be sorted! I think that I have 90% of the bits now that I have sorted out how to fit my brakes - just needs time to finish
