On my 16v engine i think that the standard oild cooler is water cooled? Is this correct?? i have kust bought a mocal oil cooler, so want to know if i lose the water cooler part of the oil cooler and re route the pipes(with the fitting kit) to the new 'air' cooled oil cooler

    Make sense??! :p

No... take the old one off and link the old water pipes together.

Then, buy a thermostat controlled sandwich plate and fit that in place of the old oil cooler and route the new pipes to the Mocal oil cooler. The Mocal item is an air cooler.

Just to be anal, the standard 1 is actually a heat exchanger which warms the oil up rather than cooling it down.Im using a mocal cooler aswell as standard heat exchanger so oil warms up quick then cooler keeps it at a suitable level

It warms it up and cools it down.

Or, do what I did and leave the standard water oil cooler, I read somewhere that leaving that helps to warm things up faster. When you take the oil filter off, I just screwed the new sanwichplate right into that, then the oil filter screws into that (have to jack the engine a litle to change it though). My oil temp sits at 90-94 now, about 10C down on what it was before.

Is it a bugger to change the oil filter once you have the heat exchanger and sandwich plate in place on a Mk2 then? Looks on mine like the front crossmember would be in the way of getting the oil filter off and on?

I expect yours is a 13 row cooler on your 2L. Whereas my 1.8 has a 10 row cooler. My temp has dropped from 104 ish to 92ish in normal driving, so not a big a drop as you had.

It isn't really any more hassle doing an oil change, I could of cut a slight peice out of the frame at the front, but decided against that cause it looked a bit structrual. So the only thing, I have to put a trolly jack under the engine and raise it 1cm if that, slightly annoying but not the end of the world. Better than gaining acces to the oil filter on some Jap cars anyway.

There is a few pics of my installation on my website. I found the hardest thing was fixing the actualy cooler to the car and stopping the leaks, I didn't want to do it up too tight and strip the aluminum threads [xx(]

I prefer the MK1 GTI type.

This retains the heat exchange bit it also has a thermo controled oil feed/and return. It replaces the oil filter housing. You can then locate a rad or two in front of the main water rad. Make some hoses up and you will be away.

On my old 2.1 it never went over 100deg even with aircon and a fast trip though France in the summer.

I have a spare set of the above with two small cooler rads and the fittings PM me if you are stuck

Philip - Do you have Aircon on a Mk2 then? Where did you mount the oil cooler(s) as I don't seem to have much room on my car for an oil cooler due to the A/C condensor and other bits. :)

The oil cooler rads were mounted low in line with the big bumper aperture.
Best to remove the bumper when fitting makes it all easy.

Ok - thanks for the info, will get the bumper off at some point and have a look at the available space and options. :)

Would it be wise to mount it to the actual bumper rather than the cross member? I've got a solid front engine mount and am wondering if the vibrations could cause a problem with cracking the cooler or pipe work? [:s]
