I want to rule out retarded ignition as the cause of my slight overheating, particularly on the track.

I will get it set up properly, but for the purposes of a quick test which direction do I have to turn the dizzy (looking head on) on a mk2 16v to advance the ignition?

    Cheers

stand at the left wing looking at the dizzy, twist clockwise to advance.

Yours is an 8V, find out the direction of rotation of the dizzy then go from there.
