My coolant reading on the dash will go upto 90deg then just drop to nill. I've just vag commed it and the temp reading on that also will drop with the guage from 90 down to 45degs. Is this going to damage the car? I'm driving to Ireland tomorow and am a bit concerned. The parts desk at Seat is closed, would it be worth getting a fake one before I go?
Well i'm back now. I couldn't get one before I went but 500miles later the car is good and averaged 45mpg on a run. Must get down the Seat ASAP
seat, vw, audi theyll all the same part plus your heaters will work better when it gets back to winter time again
is it deffo the sensor? had exactly the same on our 1.4 SEAT Ibiza, turned out it was actually a faulty thermostat. would get to 90 is sat long enough, drop back to 0 if driving. its cos the temp gauge on later dubs arnt linear, '90degrees' on gauge can be anywhere between 60-120degrees or something
This is a later Seat? If it is then the temperature gauge (G2) and the engine coolant sensor (G62) share different parts of the same unit. Our Bora V5 does this intermittently.

Not related to engine coolant temp unless G62 is coming up as shorted to pos or ground on the engine fault readout. Our Bora V5 does this intermittently.
Its a 2000 X-reg. The fault code came up as G62 but I cant remember is it was shorted to ground or sibnal implausible.
Check faults in the instrument menu as well, if you see G2 Coolant temp then you would have your answer why the cluster temp gauge went a bit iffy.
what kind of sensor is it, is it a green 4 pin one with a rounded side to the connector? if so i have one spare, its the one i took out of our SEAT when we had the issue, I suspected the sensor but it was the thermostat. free to you if its suitable? if you want a new one I understand, get on ebay thats where I got mine from, genuine VW as well! seems to be a common issue on the MK4 Golf if the auctions are to be believed, I guess why there are so many sensors on ebay. There are 2 types from my research, you got the earlier square plug one and the later green one with the rounded side to the plug. Oh and check carefully its a gen vag one, most arnt
