Best bet is to try new bulbs for starters, only cheap from vw.[:D]

Pop the side trims from around the switches either side of the dials, remove various self tappers, remove fascia, remove self tapper either side of dials, pull dials out and unclip speedo cable etc.

Pull em out and the bulbs just twist out.

Cheer mate, will rip it apart to tonight! or at least have a look.

Spent most of yesterday getting a new battery and working out what all the loose wires in the stereo slot were for. There were about 15 wires, none of which were connected to any speakers. All works now though and sanity has been restored.

    Thanks again

Lights are working but they are very dim. Is this normal? They are a green.

I did move it to its brightest. Basically its lowest is off and brightest is dull. Guess it is just a little more quirky than my A3 1.8T Quattro. I am sure I'll get used to it. Just needs a good sort out and tune up.

I didnt need to replace then bulbs in the end. They are just so dim I couldnt reallly make them out until it was completely dark.
I have got a guy coming over today top give it a tune up anda check over. Will let you know if he tells me anything worth sharing.

yep, should come on with the ignition so you can easily find the switch in the dark.
