    Hi
Im considering the 20vT transplant as per QPE guide (ie AGU engine mated to mk 2 8v GTI box, with 16v Cover plate and 'Sport' 8v Clutch) My dilemma is will the Mk2 GTD box match up too. I heard that the Diesel box is stronger internally and whilst they both offer the same ratios the final drive is different and gives the diesel box a longer in gear change, so you could hit 60mph in 2nd gear? Are the drive shaft splines the same size???

    Current Engine + gearbox
    1.8 8v PF Engine + 020 (Standard 8v rod change gti box)
    Proposed Engine + Gearbox
    1.8 20v T AGU + 020 ( Golf GTD SB engine AWY?? Gearbox)

Any Advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

Same trength inside, its basically the same box.
Diesel final drive is usually 4.25, really short not long, which then means they use different ratio's for 1-5 to get the gearing right for a diesel engine thats doesn't rev.

The AWY has a 3.9 final drive though as it's the later mk2 box.

    Thanks for that

In my 1991 Golf GTD the following redline markers are placed on the clock, assuming that the old sb engine limits its self to 5000rpm:
    1st Gear = 25mph
    2nd Gear = 43mph
    3rd Gear = 64mph
    4th Gear = 90mph
5th Gear = no markers on speedo

My thinking was in a 6500rpm petrol motor this would give:
    1st Gear = 33mph
    2nd Gear = 56mph
    3rd Gear = 83mph
    4th Gear = 117mph

is that the case or am i thinking too simple. ??
My GTD is quite quick off the mark and really flies along, i was under the impression that it was a stronger box to cope with the increase torque of the td engine, the reason i ask if the drive shafts are differnent is that GSF list different part no's for GTD and 8v CV kits?

Hotgolf, are you sure the diesel gearboxs are shorter? Because usually, diesel gearbox will give you a LONG gear ratio all the way.
I know the Seat GT TDI gearbox has a 3.15 FD.

The final drive is shorter not the whole gearing.
The one above is a 3.9 and the 4t's are a 4.25, so a very short final drive, and you can get the 4.46 from VAG too if any of the hillclicmb boys are looking for a short F/D for an o2a.
The way they make it up is using really long gearing 1-5th.
    Now

Has the GT tdi got a 6 spd. box?

Edit: topic is on about the mk2 boxes which I've only just noticed. So, the mk2 boxes havea really short final drive, but later boxes vary quite a bit depending on box code.

The GTDs use the same box as found in 1.6 and 1.8 carb'd models, which I always thought were longer geared, but I don't know ratios.

What I do know though is that you'll have to change the drive flanges to accept 100mm driveshafts as they will currently only accept 90mm driveshafts.
