Just pulled up outside my house and noticed that the power steering was whining really loudly!

Jumped out and checked the fluid and noticed it was bone dry! :o

Just wondering what the best fluid is to use? And if there is a difference between various ones.

    Cheers

    Richard.

There is probably little difference between the top brands.

But. Why not just use VW stuff? No matter how expensive it might be, compared with some others, it's still cheap, compared to a petrol fill-up!

    Kindest,

    Dave.

Is there any issue with the different types of fluid available for the VAG power racks?
I had a pain of a time trying to identify the crossover date between fluids a while back. I thought that one type of fluid damages the seals if used in the wrong pas rack.
The old red or green fluid thang!

Can anyone back me up on this?

Sorry Danny! I did not realise that different fluids were used![:$]

I just assumed that, as most VAG cars, from 1977 to 2005, used G002000, that all of them did![:s]

Thinking about it. Does it not state, on the power steering fluid bottle, which fluid to use?

I am pretty sure the Audi 100 has G002 on it. May be wrong, I often am![:$]

1 thing i learned on this forum was:

The PAS bottle cap tells you!

If its red, then red fluid. (old)
If its green then its the green stuff (newer)

All mk4 golfs had green caps mind.

You have to be careful of what colour fluids you top up with.

    Common or garden Red Cola.

    Or the rare Madori.

I don't know how old you are Tommy, cos. you won't tell us!

But in 1977, Audi 100s used G002000, which is Green! That is old!

What is the VAG number for RED fluid?[:s]

    I'm 39 Daved [:$]

Not sure what the VAG number is for the red fluid,i used ATF on my old mk2 rack but someone had already put green in it & wrecked the seals [:x] so i changed the whole lot for newer parts that took green stuff :)

if its red cap, you use bog std dexron II ATF fluid. the green fluid came in on some of the later MK2s, from mk3 onward they all had green.
apparently its not a good idea to try red on a car thats had green in it as the seals dont like it? red is slightly thicker and green will generally leak out of a system thats had red all its life. sort the seals with new vw ones and you can use either fluid, red is cheap and easily available, so i go with that!

I didn't get a chance to pass my local VW today, so popped into GSF, Greenford branch, on the way in to work.

It wasn't whining this morning but was still bone dry, with a little bit of bubbling inside?

Using the CGTI card i managed to get a bottle of Green FEBI power steering fluid for 6, which isn't bad. And its quite a large bottle. Only used a slight bit to top it up and all was fine. Still got loads left.

Cheers for the info above everyone ^^^

    Enjoy the weekend..... [:D]

    Heads-Up lads.

VWs latest green fluid is G004000.

This replaces G002000 and can be mixed with old G002000!
