Hi there! I have a 1.8t mk2 running on megasquirt. During and after short journeys on the motorway maybe 10 or 20 minutes. Cruising at 70. If i out my foot down to over take etc it starts to judder, popping and banging out of the exhaust. Even off the motorway i can drive normal no problem but as soon as i put my foot down same again popping and banging.

Sometimes itll clear if i leave the car for a bit. Other times itll kill a coil pack.

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance

I had the car mapped and dynoed a few months ago. He picked up on bad earths as the voltage display on the laptop was fluctuating quite a bit he managed to smooth it out a fair bit but it was still bouncing a litte

You can't map poor wiring out ...its hands on and sort it back up your earths ..check wiring

In addition to what Eddie was suggesting, what coil packs are you using.

In post two of this thread, two types of coil packs and the associated wiring are shown.

So are your coil packs the 3 pin non amplified or the 4 pin internally amplified?

    Good.

    Now to the megasquirt...

Was this ECU built or ordered with internal ignitors or without?
When the car was mapped who did the initial configuration?

I never built the car dude. I brought it as it is and took it to be mapped as soon as i could as it ran like dog s***. Thats as far as i got. I spoke to the mapper and all he said was it could be down to a dodgy coil driver and that it would be best to convet to a ford coil pack

    Okay.

COP amplified or non, will work pending the ECU hardware.

The Ford Sigma or Pug/Reno Sagem 4 pole coil packs are non amplified and work just as well but once again this is pending ECU modifications.

The other issue that will blow you coil packs are the dwell settings. However if the ECU was built with ignitors, then you will amplify and amplified COP and damage the coil pack.
That is what I was trying to determine remotely. Your designated mapping place should be making these checks, before righting off the coil packs as dodgy. The COP work pretty well on these when the system both hardware and calibration are configured properly.

How do i check the dwell settings and if the ecu has ignitors? He did remove the ecu and open it up what he did when it was open i dont know i had left at this point.

First grab hold of the ECU and open it. Take a picture of the internals and share on here.
This is to check that there are no ignition drivers installed.
If there are, then these need to be removed and the ECU hardware reconfigured. If not then on to the next step.
If there no igniters the dwell needs to be set on 'fixed' as the COP will control its own dwell via the internal electronics.

The above ECU seems to have coil drivers fitted!

It should not if running an amplifed coil pack!!!!

Not sure who built that either as it does not look like the work of EFI.co.uk or myself who built a few.

That ECU and most likely the map config settings needs looking at.

Is this something you can do? Or can you recommend anyone?
