    Well folks.
I have had to drive Lainey's Mk4 25J today and the gear change is awful.

It is very stiff, like there's a lot of friction somewhere in the system, and it won't self centre into the 3rd/4th plane.
    It has covered 142,000 miles.

    So.

Do these cable changers require lubrication?
Do they need to have the cables changed regularly?

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards,
    Dave.

Cables should be fine, But just unclip them ( wee flat screwdriver) at selector tower dead handy and that will tell you if the problem is in the box/ selector tower
or cables/gear stick and go from there

Pick showing clip on tower

Usually the cables, but these boxes also have the tendency to snap off the selector fork inside the box on 3rd/4th.
If the cables are loose when disengaged try the mechanism on the box by hand.

Got around to looking at the problem at last.

Disconnecting the cables was really easy and, as suggested, proved that they were not the cause.

What was stiff was the relay lever, it was almost impossible to turn by hand! I eventually managed to push it out and found it coated with crud.

Cleaned the bushes and lubricated all shafts and bushes with Fuchs 'Pro' grease.

Change is really good now with self centring action stop on.
