Its about time I started an actual thread to put all my random photos into so here you go... My sisters BF got hold of a nice mk1 from a friend in Scotland but decided not to keep it so offered it to me This is the first picture I have which was a MMS he sent me: "Mk1 golf 1.1, solid shell, you interested?" I decided to buy it as a nice cheap run around (was only 18 at the time I think) so got it home and the shell was really sound except a few rusty spots The only issue with it was the engine wasnt running straight and was using oil - at this point I knew very little about mechanics so with my dads guidance I started to learn. It was about the same time I joined here This is the engine when I started to strip it... Edited by: AndyCEB
I decided at this point I was gonna strip the engine down completely by removing it So after unwiring and cliping everythign i pulled the engine out! (excuse the old towel, tried to keep myself clean! ) And voila an dirty, empty, dirty engine bay Decided once I had got the engine down it wasnt leaking abit, it was leaking quite alot! Was quite worried at this point that I had no clue what I was doing but my dad talked me through it and the haynes came in quite helpful The engine stand I bought was a real life saver, would recommend anyone doing the same to get one And the strip down began Edited by: AndyCEB
Cheers guys Ill try and keep it updated but ive got pics on several different PCs! Some more... Turned out much of the oil was leaking over an old sump gasket and even one of the bolts was missing! I stripped the head off next, good thing too it was a tad dirty! And judging by the spark plugs it was running abit rich (noticed you can see the old torn up valve seat seals on the floor too ) Edited by: AndyCEB
Sticking with the 1100 atm tim while im at uni as its only gonna be for buzzing round town My mate has a 2.0 16v which he might be selling next year (Jon I think you met him at santa pod last year? Grey mk1 caddy? on carbs?)
Well the stripdown continued, learn loads and I think its setup me up well for future conversions etc Here are a couple more pics but not many because they are oily and boring! While it was apart I spend what turned into hundreds on new everything for the engine! Bolts nuts seals etc - alot quite difficult to get becuase of the engine but atleast it has all been replaced! I also cleaned it all and painted the block silver, think it turned out well And while it was out I fitted the good old 16v servo and MC After cleaning the bay furiously I bolted the engine back in!
Thanks for the comments guys! Well as this was suppost to be a nice cheap sensible car maybe I should have just put it in for an MOT their and then.... ...but no, it happened, I decided I would make this abit of a project So I decided that the brakes for a start had stood there and rusted so they needed to go! For ease I replaced them with nice new GTI calipers, pads and vented disks supplied by Midland VW (plus somehow the previous owner had fitted a different type on eiher side!!) While I was replacing those I thought well I may as well get some new suspension, so I bought new shocks and springs dropping it 40mm (dont have a pic tho! ) Also I decided this would be a great time to replace the wishbone bushes! (and knacked tierod) All the old stuff Painted and poly bushed up The same treatment for the rear beam too... Scraped all the crap off and painted... Then decided hamerite silver would be a better choice (because you see it so often! ) Painted all poly bushed and the washers you need which arnt included in the kit!!
Thanks for the positive comments! Few more pics! The next part I decided to sort was the bodywork, for the age of car it was really good and structurally it is perfect but still had a few body problems so I thought I would tackle them. The main one was a rusty drivers side wing caused by the previous owner not using arch linersIt didnt look that bad from the outside but was rusting from the inside out - bought a new vag wing from GPC (no pics atm ) The other main issue was the rear arches You should just be able to see in this pic the bubbling rust, it was the same on both sides I sanded it down with some paper... I hit fresh metal quickly so was chuffed that I thought I had caught it in time Some anti rust treatment and anti rust primer later they looked like this. Sorted (for now) Next on the wishlist was Audi 80 door handles so I chatted up my dads mate who owns his own welding company to come over one sunday and do some work Removed rear badges holes and wiper Removed bottom trim holes And started on the Audi handles! - scarey at this point!
