Easy job, no need for pics!

Basically, leaver off the end cap with a screwdriver (usually green with a VW symbol on it if original) You will need to get a new one of these as you have to break it when you remove it.

Its pretty obvoius how to take out the thrust bearing out when you see it. Disconnect the clutch cable from the gearbox and the bearing will just pull out. Slip the new one in, connect up the clutch cable, knock on the new end plate and bob's your uncle!

The 020 trans uses a funky clutch setup, the PP is bolted to the engine, and the flywheel fits over top. The input shaft of the trans is hollow, and a long pushrod is used to disengage the clutch. The pushrod simply presses against the thrust plate on the PP to collapse the PP and disengage the clutch.

The other end of the pushrod is supported by the throw out bearing, or clutch release bearing, or pilot bearing, or thrust bearing, whichever moniker you choose. :p

It isn't like the rest of the cars on the road, with the bearing being near the clutch unit, the 020 bearing is at the other end of the trans, sitting in oil.

Does anyone know why VW chose to make it this way round instead of having a 'normal' clutch like everyone else? Are there any advantages to it? I was thinking about this the other day whilst changing a clutch on a Nissan :)

probably for ease of access as on others you have to strip the gearbox off to access them.
