Great stuff Steve, can you supply me details please? Would save a lot of hassle in my one when fitting the front cage if I could ditch the heater box. Thanks, Martin
They are made in Germany, take about 6 weeks to arrive. takes 30 seconds to clear a screen completely. PM sent with details.
Well here are some pics of todays progress. I got a bonnet and tailgate off of a friend, so we started to strip them down, dad was in charge of the grinding and I addressed some areas of rust and gave a quick rub down before they are primed. Metal removed from doors / bonnet / tailgate (8kg's in total). Headlight. Stripped down. Trial fit / mock up of where its intended to go. Had the grille off to remove headlights etc so thought I would take some snaps of the cooler if anyone was interested. The car as it stands. Hopefully the windows will arrive this week! Thanks, Martin
Thought it would be a custom job, can't find anything like that anywhere. That is some serious weight saving going on, takes some balls to take an angle grinder to such a clean car.
It doesn't cost as much as you think getting something custom made, worth it if there is nothing available. Thanks, got some stiff competition, few of the boys up here are building track cars (16valvers Mk1 16V and goof's Mk2 1.8T) so got to try and get the weight down and power up. All a bit of fun though.
Well I didn't get much done this weekend as was feeling a bit under the weather so hope to have a good one at it next weekend. The old boy made some good progress end of last week though. Cut out some much needed cooling holes in the bonnet for the engine. I found on the track the intake temps were getting quite high and the car was loosing power due to getting a bit hot. You can see the bracing removed under the bonnet as well. Got a NACA duct on its way to help cool things as well. My windows arrived on thursday so got the back ones fitted. Removed the tailgate lock / latch and fitted the latch springs on the rear. Going to run the car like this as got a trackday coming up in a few weeks then get the bonnet / tailgate painted. Thanks, Martin
Thought it was time for an update! It was the first track day of the year at knockhill on friday so was a mad rush to get the car ready. Never got the front windows in so was hoping for dry weather. Being Scotland it rained [:^(] Ended up with a wet bum by the time the car had been trailored down the road but just go on with it. Had a magic day passing alot of things it shouldn't have and ended up clocking around 50 laps. Car performed well apart from the MAF dying (still under vw warranty luckily) and was god to get some more track time in. Lots more to come from it! Ess_three came along for the banter and had a session in the car which I believed he enjoyed. Looking forward to seeing his anni at the next one or so. My girlfriend was the original photographer but wasn't out of the car much due to the freezing temperature and driving rain / sleet. Got some of the car when we had loaded it back up so thought I would share them. Thanks, Martin
I want more!!! Best mk3 i have ever seen and honestly, im not a big fan lol! What an awesome thread, keep it coming dude! Ove always wanted to do summat like this but with summat silly like a mk2 1.3 and see just how quick i can get minus all the glass and unneeded bits and bobs! Dan
Awesome mk3 mate & decent thread! Just a couple of things, the OZ wheels, what are the details on them and what tyres do you run? Do they rub or anything and are your arches standard? What degree of camber are you running up front? Cheers, Tom.
Thanks for the comments. Matt, no comparison yet, I know both the cars will be developing this year so hopefully get them on the track together later this year. The OZ's were a lucky find on ebay. 8x17" ET35 with 10mm spacers on the front and 16mm on the back. My arches are very unstandard with rolled front wings and flared rear arches as I used to run 9's on the back with no scrubage. At the moment running about 1.6 deg of -ve. Lots more to come but was too wet a day to check the temperature of the tyres. VRSteve I need your engine more to the point Spent too much on this one to give up on it now though.
Not updated this for a while so thought it was about time. Not much been done on the car, stripped the sound deadening off the interior foot wells, heater box has been binned. Windows are out for parts of the car to get painted and got the new 'wet' wheels on. Running a BMC at the moment but thinking of going back to the carbonio. Also a few wee bits for the engine... These finally arrived after about a 5-6 week wait, chuffed. Engine work should be getting done over the next few weeks and should be mapped for inters. Thanks, Martin
Nice one man, will be great to see it after the new head and cams go on. The new wheels look smart too. Glad you enjoyed removing the underseal!
