Can anyone recommend a good way of tracking down vintage tools, like a website that specially deals in them or some sort of online exchange thing? I'm looking for a bar-type tap wrench made by Moore & Wright some time during the 1960's and not really getting anywhere... eBay hasn't really been helpful so far, and I'm not sure where exactly to post a Wanted ad. I doubt I'd get many hits off Gumtree, for example, so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Or if someone had one they were willing to part with, that would be even better I think it looks something like this
There's an ebay seller onlyoneshelly359 who deals in this sort of stuff, but his stock varies a lot. He's got a little shop in Wallington Surrey, at the village hall, but he keeps odd opening hours, so best to drop him a message on ebay. If he doesn't have any himself, he might know where to get hold of some. His name is Mick.
He usually opens out of normal hours, so the odd evening. I think he runs it aswell as having a day job?????? I've bought a fair amount of stuff from him.
what is that tool?????????? never seen anything like it. I realise its a tap wrench but whats it for?
The knurled piece you can see is an thumbwheel/adjuster. You place a tap in the hole, and use the thumbwheel to hold it in place. The modern equivalent (you twist one of the handles to open/close the jaws); The smaller ratchet type are very handy too, especially in confined spaces;
Why on earth would you want one of those, when copared to the modern ones we use now, or am i missing something. Are they a better design? My tap/die set works well enough?
It has sentimental value. And the Moore & Wright one is meant to be a little less a piece of pish than the one pictured, which cost the princely sum of $12AUD. To be fair it does look rather more elegant than the modern type pictured. So anyway Mick said that while he does come across them fairly often, he doesn't have any now. And God willing Sod's Law applies, it looks like I'm probably in for a longish waiting game. In the mean time does anyone else have any other suggestions on where to track one down?
dose it have to be a Moore & Wright some ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOORE-WRIGHT-TAP-HOLDER-WRENCH-SHEFFIELD-ENGLAND_W0QQitemZ370324822985QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET?hash=item5639145bc9 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ECLIPSE-TAP-WRENCH-NO-246-1-4-TO-1-2_W0QQitemZ280456448165QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Measuring_Tools_Levels?hash=item414c81c8a5
Yeah it has to be M&W and it has to be the flat bar type.. Trawled through eBay with a finetooth comb. Thanks anyway.
My local tool shop Leeside Tools http://www.leesidetools.co.uk/ have always got all sorts of weirdness in stock. Definitely worth a punt I'd say. If they've got one & aren't willing to post let me know & I'll go collect it & post it to ye. They're only up the road
Just realised that as an apprentice I plagerised Moore & Wright. I made a tap wrench identical to this one! http://srx.uk.ebayrtm.com/clk?RtmCl...51506784706666224&lid=637059&m=131244&pi=4340
You would be better off with one of these! Eclipse No. 241 Quote:"A thing of beauty is a joy forever!"
