hi guys do any of you have any good tuning tips for the VR6? i would like it to be about 190BHP what sort of options would i have? I have looked on AMDtechnik and they have a chip for 350 quid including mapping, before and after plots of power..they say it would give me an extra 10BHP is that a good price? what other options would i have to achieve say 190BHP? cheers lads ( cheers for tips about the coolant problem think its solved!! )
If your VR6 is an OBD1 engine then i believe you can get the larger throttle body and a chip to give you a bit more. If you have an OBD2 engine i have been told there isn't much to gain as it has a larger throttle body already. Other than that an induction kit and good exhaust which may give you a bit, there is the Schrick inlet manifold kit which gives a better spread of torque, or a supercharger for around 250-270 bhp.
A Vr6 Is 174hp Standard. To Get 190 Is Easily Achievable. A Chip By Itself Is Not Really Going To Give You Much Out Of A Na Car with no modifications. A set of fast road cams with a decent exhaust and panel filter or induction kit will pretty much see you there. theres a guy on vr6 owners club selling vr6 dorathy 264 cams for 180ono. on the cheap a 2.9 throttle bodie and inlet manifold off the corrado will give you a few horses and much better response. vr6 owners club again. guy selling the two for 100. (these wont fit obd2 as it has the motorised throttle bodie) easy check, if you have a 3 pin wiring connection on your throttle body your obd1 a lightened flywheel is great, no real horse gains but everything turns over so much faster making the car super responsive 6 branch manifold and a chip should see you into the 200s (on top of the above). then it gets expensive. shrick manifold, 3litre conversiosns, superchargers, turbos and so forth it may be your lucky day...if you have a distributor vr6 engine i have a american eip tuning chip. stage 3 n/a. speed governor removed, optimises your mods for best map. check there website. EIPTUNING. no longer required as got the turbo eprom now and you could have for under a 100 man you got to love this site
the OBD1 throttle body has a ridge on the inside near the butterfly, if you grind it down with a dremel or similar that gives you more airflow, make sure you don't go too far through the metal though, if you do go through the TB get some metal putty fill the hole up with that and sand it down with 1200 or 1500 grit wet and dry and you will notice a vast difference
A mates standard OBD1 vr6 made 190hp on RR with an early version of the C2 UK remap. GVKs OBD2 car with 268s (and not sure what else) did 215 odd on the C2 UK OBD2 map... My obd1 with 2.9 tb and 268s made 206hp on a bit of a rubbish map from a nameless other supplier. There's power to be had. 190 from a healthy obd1 2.8 should be doable with just a remap.

And there is a lot in terms of calibration to be had out of these engines. The peak figures do not even tell half of the story.
I heard from Gurd's after he drove it the other week he was very impressed with your tinkering. We'll have to meet up some time, gain some knowledge from you :-) I know you been wanted to go for a spin in my car too, I've just been overwhelmed at work and the second VR hasn't allowed much time for socialising lately. Did you finish Sam's car off?? That was gonna be a beast!!
Toyotec do you mean that in the sense of taking car on RR and getting a remap or an off the shelf chip you can buy? I know you have re-callibrated your standard ecu on your vr yourself, but are there any plans to convert that into a consumer chip that us clubgti folks can buy from you?

My car was and still is being recalibrated mostly on road semi live with the dyno used to develop full load conditions. From driving a STD VR6 the other day, I did not believe how different they are. My plan was to get to grips with STD bosch logic so that the vehicle could be turbo'd without having to change the system for a standalone. It was not intended as a commercial venture. Just that my enthusiasm got the better of me and it seems that I am getting somewhere with this. I hope to soon update my VR6 thread with more information when I get chance. I have pm'd you.
Yes. I am aware. For my own work and targets and resources, I would rather deliver my own calibrations an no better place to start than on my own vehicle. Being able to update the cal when what I consider a drive anomaly occurs, right there and then, tunes the calibration more to my targets than a generic chip. This is the same philosophy that is used for many a SEM project. Controls matched to engine/vehicle and user targets.
No. In the process of starting it up. to the OP the options are; Induction update up to 180PS VR6 N/A with engine control update up to 185PS. VR6 as above, but with 6kg flywheel peak up to 195PS VR6 N/A with cams peak 205PS VR6 N/A with Compressor VR6-K 260PS. VR6 Turbo VR6-T from 310PS. VR6 Turbo with proper pistons rods from 450PS. Note vehicle needs to be in good working condition if the above peak targets are to be achieved. Power peaks used as an example in delta changes, not relative or subjective to any dyno tool.
I second that... I was surprised at how eager the recalibrated car was, even with driver + 2 passengers! It made me wonder if my standard VR is even running right! Thats some good work Eddie. Aminder, you will be pleasantly surprised!
