Hi i bought a new alternator labeled as mk1 golf 1983 DX 12v 65a but the connections are different to what i used to have?

There are 3 extra spade connectors (only 1 on old free) & none of the thread bolt/nut type (one on old one).

    Bought from here:

This is doable. Where the main 3 pins are you can link the two large spades to the red wire that goes to the starter positive. The remaining small spade will take the small blue charge warning light wire.
I may have that old style of connector and wiring lying around somewhere if you want to keep it neat though.
Do you run a battery cutoff switch out of interest as you could wire it up differently if this is the case?

no don't run a cut off switch.

would be fantastic if you did have the wiring mate.

Did not even get as far as the shed.
I have found the wiring with the correct connector for your alternator. It may be off a small engined mk1 as wires appears quite long.
The end that fits to the starter could easily be trimmed down shorter to make it fit neater. It would only require an M8 eyelet crimped on to fit the starter connection. The small blue wire could also get trimmed to wherever your blue alt warning light wire is situated.
The main thing is the plug to the alternator is correct.

After seeing this pic mind i am wondering if my car had a 90a one in it due to the round connectors?

    Not necessarily.
The round connectors are just the later style that came on all sorts of power outputs. Not just 90a

all you need is to crimp a spade terminal onto both the wires. pop the red wire one into one of the 2 B+ pins on the left, you can see they're both connected together anyway. then the blue wire goes on the D+

alternative is to send it back and ask for a MK2 Golf GTI one, will have same connections as the old one

hmm not convinced personally, maybe after a few years and they corrode a bit and make poor contact. if it was me id buy the later out more for it being easier to fit than anything catching fire

not to worried about changing the connectors, just wasn't sure if it was the right one after looking at it & if it needed re-wiring that's all.
    looks doable now.

Need a quick reply on this if no-one minds....

Looking at this would you say the 2 larger pins of the 3 pin connector at the B+ end are connected? & if so can i use both of them?

The reason is on my old wiring where the connector was round it had 2 thick red wires going to it which would be easier now to attach to both of the B+ connectors.

Is this what you meant danster?:

They often use two wires that join further away up the loom anyway. A quick continuity test with a multi meter will prove if they are linked. It does look this way in the pic.
You could just use two of the yellow female spade connectors on each of your two loom red wires. The small blue wire in the loom should go to the remaining smaller connection (D+).
