hi i have a friend who's bought a 1.8 gti (mk2) engine and it has no engine code apart from just the letter "A" and there are differences in the shape of the piston crown. can anyone give me any info on this please thanks in advance.

    What age is the car?
If it has braided steel lines going to the injectors it is a kjet EV code. If not it will be a digipants PB code.
The A on the back of the block is just a casting number and not that relevant.

it has no other codes on it eg:pb ev or anything, the thing thats confusing is the pistons are different and it goes like f**k for some reason and we don't know why its ruuning k-jet by the way

There should be a flat area about 20mm x 80mm at the top of the block above the oil filter housing just before the cylinder head and under the water outlet to the radiator. This should have the engine numbers on it. They can get rusty and hard to read though.

Get some pics up if you can to help identify.

Its must be the immense 8v torque that we're all familiar with then

He says he's bought an engine, not a car....
