Right, one for the evening shift, as promised yesterday. daved has mentioned the history of our beloved 4 cyl motor, mentions of Mercedes, Audi etc, so time to put the info up ! This could have the effect of uniting the 8AS and PFFMV, which would be...well, quite horrible. Let's see how it goes: VW took over Auto-Union (late 1964) and it became Audi The first car to carry the revived Audi name (dropped since 1939) was the Audi 70. This used an F103 engine originally jointly designed by Daimler-Benz / Auto-Union, by a team led by Ludwig Kraus. A new car was commissioned at Audi under a team led by Ludwig Kraus, for which a new engine was required. This was the Audi 80. The engine project was codenamed EA827 (EA = "Development Order" when translated) Designed by Audi and first installed in 1.5 litre carburettor form in the 1972 series 1 Audi 80 (aka B1). At the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1973, Audi launched the 80 GT, the first model to have a 1588cc EA827 engine, albeit a larger block casting, with a twin choke Solex 35/40 DIDTA At this point in time, VW had only air-cooled flat fours. Meanwhile project EA337 was underway, a small watercooled car, along with an EA398 coupe version. In 1974 VW launched the VW Type 17 Scirocco, followed by the Golf, with 1.3 & 1.5 litre EA827 engines In 1975, the Golf 'Sport' project saw the Audi 80 GT 1588cc engine installed in the Golf, initially with the Solex (pre-prod) and then with K-Jetronic fuel injection to meet emissions in California Cue the Golf GTI, the car that management backed on the one condition that only 5,000 would be built to meet min requirements for Group 1 Production Touring Cars. Eventually VW built 5,000 GTIs per month, having shifted 1 million Golfs of all types in the first 2.5 years of production As they say, "the rest, is history"... Beware Wiki discrepancies on dates - I'm working off the books! This is a list of all Golf GTI engines, preceded by the Audi installations. Work in progress / this can be expanded in due course. Mk5 possibly to add? Data? ABF & 2E onwards IIRC is technically an EA113 engine. Will revisit. AEB 1.8T left off for now, though arguably as it's the last of the design, it probably needs adding. NSU engine - when acquired by VW in 1969, it was merged with Auto Union. - I'm trying to keep this simple, and have mentioned a bit of detail earlier to deal with the misconception that Mercedes designed the EA827.
Ta Chris. I have spent a few hours today looking for the reference to VWs' taking over of Audi. The article is in a VW Driver or Audi Driver magazine. Been through about 50 or so. Have not found it yet!
Thanks Ed. I'm not sure whether to evolve this into a massive list of 827 engines (which would be great), or leave it as Audi + Golf GTI only. So Mk3 GTI in as '93 with the ABF atm. Open to suggestions. I've read there are 40 non-GTI 1.5 / 1.6 engines, that's before I get to 1.8s, so I backed out a bit to think about it!
pl = kr with different managment, so dont really need that. AGG/ADY are pretty much 2E blocks with a crank sensor, probably not required. G60 might be worth an add though, as well as the 9a/6a type block
Updated: PL added in grey next to KR PG added I think adopt the Rallye and G60 Ltd, even if some might argue they weren't GTIs? Since they were same/faster... AGG & ADY put next to 2E. Years & outputs when put in VWs?
Reference found to last of the line Mk3 8vs delivering peak torque at 2,600 rpm, as opposed to the earlier Mk3 8vs delivering this at 3,200rpm. Is this likely to be the ADY?
