Should we start a guide to the weight of brake discs fitted to VAG vehicles. Useful to compare when considering options.
Could actually have the surface area too as this is relevant so here is a start.

I suspect an internet forum joiner will need to prepare a table.

I will post more data when the table is constructed.

Golf mk3 GTI 5 stud, 280mm outer diameter of friction surface, 180mm inner diameter of friction surface, 22m thick, weight 5.3kg

    Ooh! This is progressing.

I think OEM fitment will be useful too / assume these are all front discs?

I have some Seat 305mm ones. How do you want the offset measuring?

And to really give this the CGTI touch, rear disc/drum assemblies to compare too ;)

    I has the drums!

How heavy was the 239 disc? You measured the flange thickness but not the weight!! [:x]

I am trying to put une tres belle table together here, and need bonne info s'il vous plait.

    The 239 was a centre only [:$]

Standard fitment to all tuned 8-valvers - momentum is everything and all that!

I reckon the 239 has it's place in the table. It will be good for the lads at the strip. How often will we here 239mm solid FTW!!

There are different thickness's of 239 solid too. [:-B]

Up the hills and possibly down the strips?

I weighted a 256x25mm at 5.6kg and 280x22mm at 5.8kg, that was only on digital bathroom scales though. Kam racing weighed the same size discs at 6kg and 5.5kg in the same order.

    Sorry thats not much help.

    256x12 (4x100) and 280x22 (4x100) added to post 3.

The 280 was a brand new Brembo aftermarket disc (thanks Gurds ), but the 256s were a mystery. I measured three. Two were originally off my Passat, and weighed 3kg. The third was from a scrapper and weighed 3.8kg. On closer inspection the first two were 9mm + 9.3/9.4mm thick with no ridges of excessive wear or anything, and the latter was 11.6mm, so a 12mm disc with a small amount of wear.

What are the 9.3/9.4mm discs? Nothing knackered looking about them [:s] 1.6kg there for the saving for a lightweight short course sprint or hillclimb car

    Bump!

Are the rear discs in the table?

    Drums and backplates next!

Mk2 Golf rear discs are the 226mm ones.
Mk3 Golf will be the same but 5 x 100
And Mk4 the same diameter and pcd as mk3 but separate hub and different offset.

I am editing the 1st table each time new data comes in.

Ok, any thoughts on these light 256s above?

Mk3 golfs used 256m solid discs in some models. Could be the small petrols got thinner discs than the TDs

There are uber thin 239mm discs too, fitted to Polos from back in the day, very lightweight for the drag strip lads.

Like this table. Are the mk2 rear disks including the bearing?

  19. danster Forum Addict

They were taken with new disc only, ie no bearings.

I really just started the thread to show the weight of the front discs, as they are like flywheels when you get up to the 280 / 288s and above.
