Right then, as advised before, i found out that my current 020 wasn't up for the job So ive decided to go for the 02J setup ( is there any others to concider ? ) Just need to ask a few simple questions as ive not got much experience with the conversion. So, basically what do i need to carry out this conversion ? _______________________________________________ Obvious things i can think of are - * 5spd 02J gearbox from A3 / Mk4 1.8T with shift tower. * Gear linkage with cables from A3 / Mk4 1.8T. * 1.8T clutch and flywheel. * Driveshafts ? - Can Mk2 100mm ones be used or will i have to find a set from a A3 / Mk4 ? _______________________________________________ Now the thing im not so sure about ? * Gearbox mount ? * Clutch pedal ? Will i need to change the whole pedal box ? If so which one ? * Hydraulic clutch - Haven't got a clue anout this ? * Anything else ive missed ? _______________________________________________ Any help on the above would be great. Cheers. Rich.
Gearbox mount from an 02a will bolt to the 02j. Do you want to go hydro clutch is the question? Think about the ratios you want also. You can also go 02a with an 02j shifter system. Not much difference between the 2 boxes.
Thanks for the quick reply Im guessing its much more hassle going with an 02J box then ? I wouldn't mind going 02a if its easier ? What engine is this box found on ? Mk3 ABF ? Not sure what kind of ratio's im after tbh. I'd like it be quick off the mark, and a higher top end compared to the 020.
Go with the 02J box. They're newer. There's no difference in fitting. You can keep your driveshafts, but you need to change the drive flanges on the 02J to 100mm drive cups. They come with 108mm. Not sure on the 02A. I didn't go hydraulic, I used the Seat parts to keep the standard pedal box. This also means you don't have to beat the bulkhead flat, or find the right pedal box. I have a vague recollection about the speedo drive cable having to changed, but I might be wrong there. I have a shifter if you need one. I bought a 5 speed one by mistake, when I needed a 6 speed.
Thanks for the info Sparrow. I want to retain my current pedal box too, so the use of seat parts sounds great!! 02J is newer, and what i need is a reliable box. What exactly would i need then ? And did you get most of the parts from the Ibiza or Leon ? Im guessing my current starter motor will not fit ? Cheers for the offer on the shifter. I'll PM you about that
Mk3 16v have some good ratios for a 20v although cruising revs may be a bit high. You can pick the boxes up pretty cheap too. And they already have 100mm cups. Ive know of some going for 50-60. Depends what your looking for tbh. You also need an 02a flywheel and clutch.
Ive seen quite a few of them too for sale lately, but as Sparrow pointed out above, some of the 02a boxes are getting quite tired and old like the 020's i suppose. I actually didn't know you could use the 02J without going Hydaulic, so i might settle for this tbh as it may work out to be more reliable. Just need to know exactly what i need from what Seat (Ibiza or Leon) to complete the 02J conversion without going hydraulic.
If you get the right 02J gearbox you don't even have to change the output flanges. I have a DBZ gearbox, which is going into my MK2 which came with 100mm flanges. The box was removed from a 1998 Audi A3 1.8T AGU, for reference. If you want to go hydraulic then you will need a new pedal box, got mine from a Corrado, with associated master cylinder/pipework/slave cylinder. When i fitted my pedal box i had to remove the steering column, which also involes removing the clocks to get at the top 2x13mm bolts. The fusebox holder needs modifying too. In regards to the clutch/flywheel. a G60/ABF flywheel and VR6 clutch will be more than enough.
Some great info there cheers Lewis I know someone who only breaks audi a3 1.8T's. Ive bought alot off him in the past like the wiring loom and various sensors, so im sure i could get a gearbox from him with the 100mm flanges. If not will the flanges from an 020 bolt on ? I dont want to go hydraulic, as i want to retain the current pedal box and keep things as simple as possible. I didn't actually know who could mix match a g60/abf flywheel with a Vr6 clutch. Would this be better for the power from the 20v ? So much to take in with this gearbox change, but im willing to learn the inns and outs.
Yea i know, i cant seem to find any threads since the forum upgrade though ? Can you think of anyone on here who is using an 02J without going hydraulic ?
Yup it's a well known setup for the MK4/A3. There are loads of kits on eBay. It will be more than enough for the power a K03 can pump out. The 020 flanges dont bolt onto the 02J i don't think. The 02A do however.
Cool. Anyone know the links to these threads or who started them. Ive been doing some searching but no luck yet ?
Right,if you don't want to change the pedal box, then its 02A for you! the reason is the reverse light switch is in the way of the Seat/cable conversion, unless your not bothered about haveing reverse lights that is?? I ALWAYS reccomend a CDA 02a (golf mk3 16v) for the ratio's as its about the shortest common gearbox available & it suits the 20v if fitted with a k03/k03s turbo, and they come with 100mm flanges,to give you an idea, 2nd = 60 mph 3rd = 98 mph 4th = 118 mph 5th = 147 mph (21 mph per 1000 rpm) all approx top speeds @ 6800 rpm with 195 50 15 A mk2 1.3 speedo drive is a direct fit onto the top of the speedo sender. You'll need a matching shifter tower,so 02A also, think mk3 golf/corrado Any 02A FWD VAG gearbox mount will fit, along with the mk3 golf subframed Ibiza range (cable change only so TDI or 16v/20vt mk2/3) Don't worry about driveshafts. thats enough for now really but any more questions, just shout.
Thanks Tommy The breakdown of those ratios look really good, especially top end! So i suppose if i was to buy a complete Mk3 16v as a donor car, i could use most of the parts from that to convert to a 02a ?
You would only need the box and fly, brackets, Starter? Not the whole car. Especially if you want to stay cable clutch. Tommy made a good point there.
No probs Rich! Yes all the mk3 16v parts would fit, including the flywheel (ABF & TDI flywheels are the same as a G60) If i was in your shoes right now though,i'd be looking for a mk2 ibiza cupra 2.0 16v,same as a golf (even same gearbox code) but with ALL the bits you need for the cable clutch conversion. Could be a free upgrade if you do it right.
