The clips on CV boots kits with plastic boots use a much thicker clip that's difficult to put enough crimping pressure on to seal the boot and stop the grease from leaking out, Laser now make a crimping tool that can be used for all clips but particually for thicker clips

Any idea on the cost? I generally use cable ties or tying wire - neither of which is as good as a pukka clip.

The nail pullers/pincers work a treat on the rubber boot clips but even an extra long pair won't crimp the heavier clips to the point where it seals, even with a pair of mole grips on each handle, these are the only thing I found that works

I got these, a bit cheaper than the laser ones. Seem to be reasonable build quality, tho I haven't used them yet.

How hard / easy are they use in situ??

My daily car has cable ties ontve boots and I'd like to swap them for the proper thing without takiing the shafts out

Fair comment, but if you could find a set of those that were big enough to drill and tap a 10mm bolt through the jaws, wouldn't that do the same as the 'proper' tool? They might just break them when you try to use them, but could be worth a try, for a few quid... Might take a while to drill through, if the metal's any good too.

or even a G-clamp as I did once when I couldn't (forgetton) to lend it for the weekend!

when I compare the VW clips to other brands I can see why the boot splits before the clip breaks, unlike most corsa ones I have seen!

... and what are you doing looking at Corsas? Getting down wit da kidz?

never had any trouble with the bluepoint one that I used to work with? and I worked on a few Mk5s etc? the nice thing with proper tools compared to carpenters pliers is that they press the centre in.. but you can always hold the clip with a pair of needle noses, then centre punch the bugger?
