Updates have been slow the past few weeks, as the wiring is killing me! NOS genuine VW front splitter New wing aerial Rear smooth plinth on and grommets in place of wipers My nice new fuse box Old dash loom New dash loom Along with the above and a new light switch, the front main beam works, all rear lights and interior lights work . Currently sourcing a new indicator stalk so I can turn off the main beam and then work out what wrong with dipped beam and side lights. Its almost there!
So its been a while since I have updated this, so here it goes. P-slots arrived to be refurbed incase I want to go completely stock I was getting fed up of the wiring, so started painting. Underside is now fully stonechipped and will probably be undersealed, and arches are now all red along with the brake callipers Bonnet Grill and Squeeshers repainted black instead of red And a bargain 80's headunit from glamis for 3 Then came today!! New loom appeared Which was really a bit of a fail as it wasnt 'uncut and original' as mentioned in the ad. But luckily the light loom was ok which meant this finally happened Then the bumpers arrived, so it looks like a car (quick trial fit) Thanks for looking
So everything works! Car is booked in for an MOT on friday! Couple of updates from the past few days:- Other bumper arrived with the metal part to hold it on, so this was fitted with new stainless bolts from Grampian Fasteners Indicators worked once the new once were fitted on the front Horn worked after finding the steering column earth was missing :Fail: Lower dash finally went on since the wiring is complete A new gaitor Bonnet was realigned so it would close And as it stands now
So its been a while since I've updated, mainly as removing the gearbox put me off, but i pulled my finger out this week. First off, cheers again to Mushy for the help removing the box. When removing, i also found this (hole to the left of where the driveshafts go) Luckily managed to pick up a new one today, has done less than 100k, for 40. I bought new seals for the other box, so I will replace them before fitting. Due to all the lovely weather we have been having, I noticed soggy doorcards, so go some new plastic lining for the doors. Also bagged some US rear lights with holders of German ebay Hopefully, if all goes to plan tomorrow with the gearbox, we should have the car on the road by next week
Well the car went in for an MOT 2 weeks ago and shat itself while there - piston rings were goosed, causing the oil to be pushed up the the top of the engine, through the breather pipe and through my air intake. So a new engine has been bought to replace it Its a fully rebuilt 1.8 8v with pretty much everything new on it and has about 10 miles on the clock Have bought a new water pump/ timing belt/ aux belt and the car kindly came with a new clutch Everything is unbolted from the old engine, so its ready to come out, and this one should be in mid-week
Cheers for the comments folks So this weekend, Dad and I rented an engine hoist and got cracking with the car. I had taken most parts off the engine this past week, so all we had to do, was remove the front end and engine mounts and it was ready to come out! Bay was looking sorry for its self afterwards Went in with the APC and gave it all a good clean, tidied up some wiring, and painted the subframe and chassis legs in hammerite (which matches the mars red almost spot on) Also been stocking up on more new parts, and have acquired a new radiator and new header tank to keep things looking fresh. Also ordered up heaps of re-manufactured stickers to keep everything looking oem under the bonnet Big thanks to my Dad for the help and Mushy for diagnosis and use of a grinder.
Cheers folks, another update! So today, Andrew popped round and did some work on the engine. Got the new clutch and flywheel fitted, then the gearbox. Car is timed according to the Haynes manual, but I am convinced its not right, so need someone to come and have a look for me. Progress So the engine is now in, wiring rewrapped and plugged in and most cooling pipes on. Fingers crossed I will have a running car at the weekend! Thanks to Andrew for the help with the engine today, and mushy for the use of his 9mm (splined socket)
Some more updates for you. Bought some new seats at the weekend for a bargain price: With the centres going to be retrimmed in the below fabric: Got a seat base made up for the passenger side, using parts from my old seat - boy did a spot on job and even painted it for me! If anyone needs any fabwork done speak to Duncan at Thomfab Fab'd frame at the back Fitted the seats:- Cloth for the centres and rear will be ordered next week on payday Then Mushy popped round to check my timing which was spot on . Built up the engine and was going to try and start it tonight, but found a coolant leak, so have to address that tomorrow
Yeah they are 1552 snowflakes. More updates Starter motor arrived and fitted, turns over, but still not start. Dont have front wipers or horn etc either, so after discussing with Ross, it looks like I may have the main earth fitted in the wrong place, which is causing these issues. Despite this I have been cracking on with the interior etc Gloss black slam panel, with OEM stickers and mirror polished bolts. Also have mirror polished rocker buts, battery bolt and meter head clamps to go on Heading lining was in a shocking state of affairs Now retrimmed in fake suede. A,B,C pillars are currently being done in the same, and I have mirror polished screws to fit these also. And now for me seat centres . Made the seat back sections last night and trial fitted them today - well chuffed!! Just the bases to do now! Awaiting a 60:40 rear seat with OEM headrests to arrive, which will be retrimmed the same as the front. Just gotta decide what to do with the door cards!
