Hi, I think I read somewhere that some of the later spec gti's (j reg ones) had slim jim plates fitted to them as standard, would this be the case on a H 91 model does anyone know please? Sorry for asking this, but if I were to check my car for them where exactly do I need to look!? Thanks, harryvr6.
If I remember rightly they are a plate that fits inside the door that bolts in behind the latch and stops someone breaking in from the top through the scraper seal
I had a runout j reg gti and I didn't have the slim Jim plates fitted as standard, they were also known as anti rip plates. Been obsolete for some time now. I have a couple of pairs somewhere in the back of my garage
They stop people using a slim jim tool (a thin strip of metal with a notch at the bottom) to lift the latch and opening the door without damaging the door or lock.
I'm glad that some asked that question because I didn't know either. As it turns out I have some in a box of bits that came with my car. Most people have alarms and immobilisers now so they are almost a thing of the past.
I bought na pair from C&R years ago that come with the handle surround as well to stop people prising the handles out. Mine was fully alarmed but didn't stop the ****s prising the passenger door before running off (nowt was stolen luckily..).
I walked into vw Germany last summer and they were in stock next day and 5 a pair. Think there on classic parts now. Not expensive but I doubt there much of a deterent in 2014. If they can steal a Ferrari a wee bit of metal won't do much. A good screwdriver would get you in. And well starting a mk2 doesn't take to much either to be honest!!! I would say a steering wheel lock that covers the whole week is a better bet along with a handbrake.
