Hello everyone. I've noticed on my mk2 golf R32 the dash water temperature gauge seems to go up to 2/3 of the way before the radiator fans kick in. The oil temp on the mfa (using a mk2 golf temp sender) is reading between 60-70 degrees. This doesn't seen right to me. The ecu is showing water at 100 degrees when the radiator fans kick in and the rad fan switch is rated to operate at 85 degrees (tried two). I'm so used to seeing the rad fans kick in when the water gauge is only half way up on my old ABF. Wondering if the R32 water temp sender is calibrated differently and not showing acurate water temp on my mk2 cluster?
It was a while since I did mine but I'm using a VR6 temp sensor as it's what most people use. Seems to work fine on mine. How did you get the MFA working? I'm using MK3 clocks though...
So the original R32 water temp sender for the dash water temp gauge on a mk2 is not 100% compatible with mk2 clocks? On a vr6 where is the water temp sender for the water temp gauge located? I have oil temp and both oil pressure warning systems working by fitting an additional pressure sensor and oil temp sensor (from an ABF) to the front of the R32 oil filter housing. Just removed the forward facing Allen bolt and fitted a 'T' piece
on a VR6 theres a 4 pin and 2 pin sensor, the 4 pin for the dash and rad fan control unit, the 2 pin for the ecu. r32 has a 4 pin sensor which does the dash and ecu only. The mk4 coolant senders are not the right rating for mk1/2/3 dash, couple ways around it see the notes section here: http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?267196 1990: you have 2 oil pressure switches and an oil temp for the mk2 dash, the oil temp only for mfa so can be left off. but if you want it some kind of T piece, or sump plug adaptor is required
Thanks John, very helpful link. That will sort the gauge out for sure. with my oil pressure system. The R32 has one pressure switch on the oil filter housing so only one wire going into the car for the clocks. I ran another wire from the clocks (fusebox plug) to another pressure switch which I mounted to the front of the oil filter housing using a 'T' piece. I did this for oil temp aswel. Now I don't need to worry about any flashy lights or buzzing from the dash
I haven't finished it yet but looks like this so far... T piece for 2nd pressure switch and oil temperature....
Oh yeah you got no need for vss to ecu cos you stand alone I did the same, both pressure senders in the housing then inline sensor for temp going to my mocal What ecu was it again
Are you going to leave the cam timing in power mode I read the emerald can't change the cam timing quick enough between low end torque mode a high end power mode I heard it had to be pectel or motec business for that Eddy?..... lol
taks the vss signal for the mk4 ecu can be had from MK2 MFA clocks, W/1 on CE2 or if CE1 its a yellow/white wire straight out the clock plugs on the mk2 its used for speed sensitive volume control on the posh stereos, or cruise control if fitted
Wow, so the clocks take the mechanical input and converts it into a speed signal? I didn't know that, but makes sense I guess as that's what the gbox sensor is doing modern setups....
yeah its used by the MFA itself for the MPG calculation as well, its done by a wee speed sensor on the back of the clocks, you can swap one off a gti cluster into poverty spec too if you dont want a full mfa dash in your motor even on mk3+ the VSS signal for the ecu/cruise/radio etc comes out the clocks, the speedo sender on the box only feeds the clocks themselves. I'm not sure if the signal is the same, or if there is some kind of conversion done by the cluster though?
You can see the speed on the mfa by going into the 'secret' setting on the mfa. regarding the mapping, will.see what Mr E recommends but at the moment it's hyper sensitive at low rpm.
What wire you are guys using for the MFA from the MK4/5 ECU? Also Taks, Are you using a sandwhich plate for your Mocal or have you ditched the stock one?
Matt which function on the MFA? I ditched the standard one as the stock r32 was chunky and the front mount needed messing with. I bought a Mocal vr6 setup from think auto. I put the two pressure senders in the oil housing and the i bought a m10x1 sensor holder for the temp (on the oil cooler inlet line) I can take pics if you want- My front end is off at the moment....
