    Hello,

Im thinking about building a roll cage for my mk2 golf. It's not for motorsport purposes so it doesnt need to comply with anything or whatever. Its more just to add a little stiffness to the car and keep it from pulling itself apart when running haldex and higher power.

I'd like to keep it minimal so i can still use the car on the roads without having to fall out of it everytime i stop at the shops so...

    - Keep the back seats in (not that they will be used) so it looks like a road car still.
    - No bars between the door openings.
    - Cage in the back over the top and then down to the front legs.

Anybody got any recommendations or where to start / look? I haven't done one before.

    Thanks

Stay away from "dash dodger" ones. Realistically, if you don't link the A and B pillars, and have an A pillar bar that bends around the dash, it'll make flip all difference to stiffness and strength. And you definitely want one with mounts that are in proper load spreading, FIA/MSA (Motorsports UK now) spec plates.

Do you mean i need to tie the A pillar and B pillar back to the cage with a plate?

No, with bars, usually referred to as door bars, diagonals, or X bars if there's 2 each side in an X shape.

That isn't a bad idea though, they're usually referred to as cage gussets. They help a lot.

Ahh across the door opening? I was hoping to not put them there as I don’t want it out and out track car just still nice and usable day to day. Is there completely no point without those?

It will stiffen to a degree, especially if you use the gussets, but a door bar will help a lot. You could just put in one low one?
