Hi All, Being a member of other car forums I know it is bad form to just weigh in with questions without a bit of an intro first so here it is. I'm Phil and my son and I have just bought a 1991 Mk2 Golf Ryder 1.3. It's my son's really but as I am the one with the spannering skills it will be me that maintains it I know it's not a GTi but this forum seems to be the busiest Golf forum and I note others here have non GTi variants. My previous VW experience is a 1989 Mk2 1.6 Driver which was a great car until I wrote it off (with minor damage) way back in about 1996. I have also owned a 1962 Type 3 Notchback which I loved but lack of funds meant selling it back in 1995, to buy heating for our flat would you believe! It's not a bad car overall and has had some welding done in the past. No doubt it will need some more. 97k on the clock. Apart from some coil overs it is stock. My main priority at the moment is to get it running nicely and to that end there will be a post in the carburettor section shortly The car will be a daily driver which means it has to run well. I'm looking forward to being part of the community.
Hello and welcome I had the same model years ago and loved it. How old is your son and is it his first car? Mine has his test soon and I beet he would swap his 63reg Corsa for a Mk2 if the insurance price was right.
Hello and welcome! Very nice, I started out with a mk2 and my dad helped me maintain it, that was a 5 door driver with an ABF in it. I’m now building an AWD big turbo mk2 GTi, with my dad, well he uses his experience, I carry out the work! Still, it’s great. I love doing it. Working alongside him is the best part, I couldn’t care about the car really. I hope you both enjoy it be sure to get a thread up!
Thanks All, My son is 22 next week but he's been driving as a named driver since he passed his test at 17. He has mostly driven our 1.2 Fiat 500 and the Golf is a bit of a surprise to him with no PAS and brakes that aren't as rock hard. He's not driving the Golf to work yet as we need to get the carb sorted so it starts and runs right. A new Weber is currently sitting on the dining room table.......... The insurance is cheaper than a 10 year old polo 1.2 or 1.4 and less than a 10 year old 1.2 fiesta.
Ours is 18 and it will be his first insurance. I had a look last night and couldn’t see any 1.3’s for sale. Have you got any pictures of yours? I remember mine pretty well, it was J802 KCM
You are not wrong, 1.3s are very few and far between and attract a bit of a premium, price wise, unfortunately. I'll upload some pics via Imgur as soon as I get a chance
Welcome, really helpful bunch on here. We have 2 4 door mk2 1.6 golds, ones mine, one my wifes, restored hers in lockdown and the white one is a project. We looked last year at a mk3 for our son, got told by insurance the 1.3/4 and 1.6 were in same band, ended up with a polo instead though.
Thanks very much. To be fair it photographs better than it looks close up. It suffers from the usual red paint fade and will need regular polishing with red polish to maintain a good look. I paid more than I should have but these cars seen to be going up in value quite rapidly and the 1.3s are few and far between. £2.3k
That’s a good price, I’ve been looking for my son and I’m surprised at the price of Mk2’s at the minute after not looking at them for about 5 years. I’ve seen a nice 1.4 Mk3 and now wondering if he will be able to insure that as a first car and also if the prices of them will go the same way.
When we enquired, mk3 was cheap to insure for Ed, but every one we rang to go see had sold, and the 9n3 came up stupid cheap. Stick some details in a comparison site and see what comes up
Which is the best sub forum to start an ongoing restoration thread on our car? Gradually starting to get bits a prices done and want to keep it all in the same place.
