I hate it too, luckily this is all I’ve got to do. So I’m happy about that

Could be better but it’s covered by arm trim anyways

Gutter bolts through the 1/4 panel. Simple. Smear some Tec7 over the heads, to be super tasty. :p

I agree with John, it's a great place for the battery, but maybe more for a race car?
I'd be nervous if a side impact causing it to create an electrical fire.
I know the OE front fitment could be argued to be as bad, but the chassis leg under it takes a lot of brunt.
What about on the floor behind the front seat?

Yeah maybe, I’ll have a look.

Not sure how I feel about it being there, mostly sure it’ll be fine but you never know.

Moved my shifter forward as the cables wouldn’t reach

    C69AC788-251B-442D-9A08-6C75B8BD632E.jpeg

And then sorted the tunnel out, whilst welding up the tunnel I managed to cause a rather large fire, it set light to the rubber on the shifter cables. Doh!

    Tack, bash, tack, bash. C37E8358-9134-4179-85B2-81D5254D7D65.jpeg

So now that’s done. I’ll tidy up, prime and seal it tomorrow. Finish my boot off and the shell is then finished. No more fab work!!

    Then onto the front shafts.

After they’re done. Cleaned all the old crap off the bottom and reindeer seal in lovely Monza Blue. Dad and I will have matching cars [:D]

    Progress!

I finished the tunnel, primed and tacked the underside up.

Then onto the boot. I had a hole.

So I got some left over sheet metal, popped the rear seat in, measured it up, smashed some metal over a bit of wood and hey presto!

Shaped the edges and cut it in half, A, to reduce the bend from the metal stretching when I bashed it and B, means I only had to make a middle piece, not 2 ends.

Made the middle bit, tacked into place. I don’t was going to leave it tacked but I think I’m going to seam weld it.

    a little bit of primer.

    Nice gap too.

Thanks, I’m pretty pleased with out it’s turned out. Just need to fill those little bits at the bottom in, tidy up the welds and bingo.

But first up, Front shafts. Need to get those sorted as I want to get the underside done ASAP. So I think I’ll book a day or two off in the new year (if we are allowed to mix) and get them done. Then maybe mid to end of jan, get it on the spit, spend a couple of days and get it cleaned, undersealed & back on its wheels.

Nice one, but surely you meant 'carefully crafted a panel to suit using hand tools and a custom jig'
Not "smashed some metal over a bit of wood "

i have seen that battery location idea a few times now.. id not be too worried about a side impact, but the inaccessibility incase you need to do maintenance / put on jump leads etc..

Experience of owning a mk2 has taught me that a flat battery is not that uncommon.. the number of times i left the car with the lights on is unreal

the boot tray that you have installed would be ideal for a few rivnuts or even welded in nuts and a nice OEM style mk5 battery tray

There would be a terminal in the engine bay so there’s no worries if needing access. Plus the 1/4 isn’t hard to remove worst case.

I’ve never had a dead battery on a mk2. Although I will be fitting that buzzy relay for when you leave the lights on

I don’t know how I feel about it being in the 1/4 panel. I’m sure it would be fine, it’s my most liked location at the moment.
