    Hi,

    I have a mk2 golf 1.8 8v GTI 1990 PB engine code, stock.

How do I know which starter to get?

I tried using etka, but struggled to understand it.
    Any help much appreciated.

I guess a bosch model is the right one.

    Cheers

    Joe

    Brill

I know hella is a good brand.
I wonder how their exchange works...

    Thanks for being so quick!

They (VWH) don't mention an exchange for your old one - give them a buzz and ask them to be sure, if they have such a program, normally what happens is you pay the full price first and then when they receive your old unit you are refunded 30/40/50 quid back on your credit/debit card.

Cheers, I did give them a buzz - only open to 1pm apparently, so I popped them an email.
    Thanks for advice.

If you want Hella, there is one on ebay. I expect it's from what they call their "value" range. ...https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HELLA-CS...960522&hash=item25fe7f1108:g:yWsAAOSw8w1X5UUb

    and...https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genu...g:txoAAOSwAaJaFJIA&LH_ItemCondition=1000|2500

Or a Lucas one from Carparts4less 402441271. Code EGG20 gives you 20% off this price, but you need to return the old one.......https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/starter-motor
Mind you, the Lucas name seems to have been sold multiple times over the years since it's King of Darkness days. Whether that's a good thing or not, I don't know!

Not worth getting your original one repaired? What's wrong with it?

    Hella is non-exchange.
    How good is that!

Went with VWH - Hella beast- they were in my opinion good value this time (they aren't always)

Just seen the ebay link - could have saved quite a bit!
I hate shopping online for parts - it gets confusing...

It's not an original on the car - it's a bosch replacement that did 95k miles
Works fine, but just slow to engage, kinda pauses, then spins.
    Plus a little surface rust

Just pop in your new Hella one and you should be good to go - never mind about the Mk4 option but what I would consider is getting your old one checked/repaired so you have a spare or one to sell on.

Is there a FAQ on fitting a starter on this website?
Would it be prudent to fit a new front engine mount.

Do you suspect that you have an engine mount issue, is there any indication that the mount is giving you trouble? If yes then by all means but if not leave as is. This can become a very slippery (and expensive) slope in my opinion.

I’m not sure about the FAQ but do a search and they’re may be something there but as far as I can recall it’s pretty straightforward
