Yes you are right, didn't spot the lower bolt. I was going for the tactic of unscrewing the clamping bolt and trying to slide the coil out, which I struggled with.
On the front of cleaning things up, I noticed my knock sensor has been quite 'knocked' around. I reckon it is as old as the car 215k/31years time for a change. The bolt has rounded, due to rust, does it ever snap off? and leave a stud in the engine block, hoping not. Knocked off plastic surround:
give it lots of penetrating oil and go easy, you should be fine. mk3 golf knock sensors will do you, i nicked one off an audi in scrappy back in the day
It came off easily actually, its' only supposed to be torqued to 20nm New knock sensor fitted - this bosch one has really nice shielded cable. I made sure I got the 8v 540mm length one. (054 905 377 G) I understand longer ones are ok. Mototronic seems a good ebay seller and actually replied to ebay messages
Getting there, Tensioning the cambelt. It took a couple of goes of putting the crank pulley on to get that notch to line up. Rotor arm isn't dead on the mark but is close. We'll start the car another day when time permits! Timing the engine in the dark:
While refreshing the spark plugs, HT leads and cap n arm. Geeky point, but interested if others have spotted this. The VK382 AE made in Germany Beru Cap (top one) has a deep lip and minor deisgn changes to the VK382 made in Spain Beru Cap (bottom one) Not sure it makes a real life difference.
Simple Q, which way does the fuel filter go? This is pics of existing one. (made by unipart) Showing arrow, I'm thinking the previous one was fitted the wrong way
The top of the fuel filter photo is a short pipe back to that black box which you can see on the RHS of photo. The bottom of fuel filter is a short pipe to a long pipe that goes to the front of the car. The car ran fine like this for many years, but I think it's wrong myself. Below is how I fitted the new one:
Couple of minor problems when putting it all back together (a cambelt job has expanded a little): Does this strap connect to one of the coil mounting bolts (as opposed to the coil itself). We undid the coil to clean all the connections. (Note minor coolant leak onto gear shift mechanism) The ISV rubber split, part no: 027-133-459/A Time to find a supplier for a new one. Albeit I think shoogoo may come to the resuce, (which I often use for regluing RC car lexan bodyshells)
1. Yes, onto one of coil mounting bracket bolts. 2. Very common, if you find them let us know please. I've a black cable tie around mine.
